XBOX.com down at 5am EST on Oct. 20th for facelift.

Per Major Nelson:

http://majornelson.com/archive/2010/10/19/changes-coming-to-xbox-com.aspx

Tomorrow, Xbox.com will be getting a massive facelift and I want to give you a preview of what you can expect. In addition to support for the 9 new Xbox LIVE regions that will happen next month, Xbox.com will get a brand new look as well as some new features.

Here are some highlights:

Browser based Avatar editor: Edit your avatar and preview avatar items before purchase
Combined views for messages, friend and game requests
Improved notification of your account subscription
Leverage Family Reports to understand what your family is doing and how they are using LIVE
Play web games with your Xbox LIVE friends on the web or on Windows Phone 7
Marketplace: More powerful search and more intuitive ways to browse and filter

Those are just a few of the changes, starting tomorrow you’ll be able to explore the entire thing yourself.

Xbox.com will go down at 5am eastern.

In order to prepare for these changes, starting at 0500 ET/0200 PT/0900 GMT on October 20th (tomorrow) Xbox.com and the Xbox forums will be offline and unavailable for a short period of time. When it returns, you’ll see the new site.

The Xbox LIVE service is not affected by this upgrade and will remain available during this time.

That doesn't necessarily mean that that the next Dashboard Update is coming tomorrow. They are just updating Xbox.com.

They've made updates to the website prior to rolloing out the Dashboard Updates in the past.

Yeah, I just realized what I wrote and came back to change it, but too late. Can you edit the title for me?

Do you think the dashboard update comes out before CoD:BO though? That'd be nice considering I can't party chat with any of my friends right now.

It will be out on or before the release of Kinect (November 4). I saw some website say October 26 the other day but they provided no corroborating evidence.

You should be able to. Just click on Edit then Go Advanced.

How in the hell did I not know about that already? I guess I don't create many topics, but I always thought that editing titles was disabled here. Oh well, learn something new every day.

As far as the new xbox.com, I like it. I use it quite a bit and it could definitely use an update.

Yeah, I'm interested to hear about these web-based games you'll be able to play on there.

The current marketplace interface is clunky so any improvement there is a good thing.

It would be cool if they made the site mobile friendly. There's no iOS apps that I can find to replicate the dashboard very good.

I still would like to be able to forward messages and listen to voice messages online. I'll take the update though. The current xbox.com is pretty slow at times, hopefully this will improve performance.

Hopefully the new site will stop giving me "Too many redirects" errors. Happens all the damn time lately.

Looks like the new site is working....somewhat. Still running into general site errors but the speed has greatly improved over the last half hour of playing around with it. I did encounter one redirect error in Chrome but that was early on and haven't seen another yet.

I've not messed with the avatars since shortly after they came out, so I'm actually quite impressed with how large the avatar marketplace has gotten. There are a ton of stuff available now, which is cool. Can anyone explain what the props are for? Is it just a vanity item that shows in pictures with your avatar?

Some of the pages where things were once single page are now scroll happy 🙁 . Oh well it still works, they just went backwards on a few of the pages.

Good sign, first link I clicked on gives a
"Uh oh... that shouldn't have happened.
It appears you've found a glitch in the system.

Sorry. We were, uh... a little bit distracted playing Halo: Reach. We will work on fixing this right away."

Thanks MS, really well thought out upgrade.

They aren't finished doing the upgrade yet. Majornelson tweeted that they were still working on it an hour or so ago.

It's a bit silly that a company the size of Microsoft can't throw up a working site on the first try. The site is still throwing up a bunch of errors at this point.

No kidding. I went to see if that borderlands DLC was the deal of the week but the page doesn't exist. Absolutely embarrassing. This is after I've been unable to link my paypal account to buy live points, and their tech support consists of them copying links from their FAQ that happen to not even come close to the question I was asking.

Yeah I agree. I'd even prefer that they just take it down 100% than put up a half-baked site that barely works.

seems to be working fine for me

It seems as if the very main pages, like your profile, friends list, and the top page of the marketplace are all working pretty solidly. It's when you start to drill down that you get the error page. That's my experience, anyway.

If I end up with the error page, I can usually refresh it two or three times and get it to finally show.

EDIT: Looks like everything is running smoothly without errors now (for me). Now that it all is working, it's very fast, much faster than the old xbox.com. I was able to buy points and buy a couple of Borderlands DLC, also navigated through a lot of the avatar marketplace without error.

Can't open it at all from my phone anymore. Takes a couple minutes then gives an error every time. I know it's not meant for it, but I could use the old site from my phone so it's another many steps backwards.

So it isn't a step backwards if it isn't meant to open it.
