XBOX and Monitors...

Howdy all,
I was wondering if anyone has done this or knows if it will work...
I want to connect my xbox to LCD Monitor (viewsonic vp171b). I have the High def component video pack for my xbox and got to thinkin, would throwing a bnc cable on my high-def pack and connecting it to my monitors RGB input work? And if so, would it look like crap because my monitor's native res is 1280x1024. I think i have seen vga/component video convertors, but i feel like my solution would be easier and cheaper.

Thanks in advance,

No. Component != VGA. You know that whole Y-Pr-Pb thing? The only full level signal is green - the other two are just based on the signal level of green. VGA is full signal strength for all lines.

You have two real options. 1) Get a purpose-built, Xbox only converter. 2) Get a component-VGA adapter.

I went route 2 and went whole-hog with the NextVision N6, it's what I recommend every time this comes up. It's pricey, but versatile as it supports 480i, 480p, 720p, and 1080i at any output resolution. I use it to convert a Sun 21" fixed frequency, fixed resolution monitor into an HDTV. It used to convert Xbox for me, but right now I'm using a 7-disc JVC carousel DVD changer on it.

I tried a hacked bios, and bnc to rca plugs. The hacked bios didn't work... that box is sitting around somewhere waiting for someone ambitious enough to repair it. Without the bios, you could get a predominately green picture.

supafreak, i need to get a converter cable for my hd cable box so i can run a component cable to my projector which takes RGB....where/how much did you get the cable?

Thanks for the info TerryMathews
thats probably the route ill take, or ill just buy a cheap tv and live with the sub-par definition 🙁

supa, thx for the links....

sorry, but what do i need the bnc-rca connectors for?

and yeah, i'm going to need some long extension cables...hehe

edit: anyplace i can pick up these cables B&M and try em out and return them?

It's not going to work. Read above. Component != RGB.

I have a DVD player connected via a BNC to VGA and an extension cable to a NEC lt150 front projector, and it works quite well. The picture quality is very nice, albeit somewhat dark when daylight gets into my basement. Maybe im mistaken on the cable tho...

radio shack has all that crap and i believe they will take returns. Check on your local store's policy as many do vary.

weird, the instruction book for my projector specificies i can use that adaptor...i'm just trying to find a b&m place to buy the adaptor and try it out.

Sorry, not to divert the thread, but does anyone know of a good/cheaper (60 or so) component to VGA adapter I could use with PS2?
