"Xbox 720" will not be the name of the next Xbox for obvious reasons.

720 is an old sounding number. It makes it sound like 720p. We all just spent the last 10 years navigating 720p/1080p when shopping for televisions.

"Xbox 720" sounds like a product from 2006, expect this next console to not have any number in the title, is what I would guess. Even calling it Xbox 1080 would be shooting itself in the foot, given that we are now in the 4k era.

Of course it won't be called the 720, that's just the name we're all calling it right now as it doesn't have a name yet.

This is in your head only...like do you really think everyone has thoughts like you? I hear 720 I think of rotation, same with 360 by you rationalizing of nothing here we shouldn't have called it 360 because 360p was old when the xbox was released.

I guess a 720 Kick flip is not extreme enough anymore, we are not in the 4k era yet, new xbox won't even be capable of 4k it is using current hardware, and unless they drop a 690 or 7990 inside this console its not producing 4k playable, hell 680 and 7970 cant put 60 Fps out on mainstream titles @ 2560x1440p and you say were in the 4k era with no hardware to support this.

Ty OP you are the reason we have 2880x1800 apple laptops w/ gpu's that barely hold up @ 1080p, p.s. we should go by your ideas, internet is what 60~ yr old military technology so clearly we passed through the information superhighway era years and years ago.

You are right about the reason being obvious, but what that reason is you are way off. The Xbox 360 was named, 1 because Xbox 2 would have had a lower number than the PS3 and that was bad marketing, and because it was to encompass 360 degrees of entertainment in your living room. It was not to just only be a gaming device, but an entertainment device that satisfied all your needs.

The new name will probably be some other metaphor we can't comprehend. Xbox Omega: the END of your entertainment device needs! - Wow, I should work for a marketing company.

It's been a rumor for a while now that it's gonna be Xbox 8. It makes waaay more sense than Xbox 720. Microsoft is trying to push Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 and this whole ecosystem. The next Xbox will run a Metro style UI. Not to mention 8 CPU cores, 8GB of ram, 800Mhz GPU.

The X-Box YGPUFNETYAPNFN.

"You Gotta Pay Us For Netflix Even Though You're Already Paying Netflix For Netflix".

It just rolls off the tongue. :hmm:

I don't think it will be XBOX 8, I actually think the rumors from a couple of years ago were calling it the XBOX Loop, using the 8 as a sort of mobius strip icon. The main reason I don't think 8 will be used is because this console should be built to last at least 5 years, which by that time, we'll be well past W8/WP8.

Sure about that? How long did we have Windows XP? >_>

Yep, Microsoft has never referred to it as the "720", just a fan name. Not sure what they'll end up calling it. Durango is just a code name. Maybe even just "Xbox".

I think they should call it the Xbox 420 for marketing purposes. Big hit with baked teenagers and frat boys, their core demographic if XBL is anything to be believed. ^_^

Along the same lines, PS4 will most likely be called the Playstation Orbis. Name fits.
