wouldn't surprise me if they had a cheap base station like the apple TV and the power of the console was in a tablet or phone.

the next ARM CPU/GPU will be as fast as the PS3/box 360. graphics aren't that big a deal to a lot of people anymore. ARM hardware power is increasing at a fast rate, doubling in power every year or so. if you can get people to buy a tablet/ipod touch type device every 2-3 years there is no more reason for a 5-10 year console cycle anymore.

if MS won't do this then apple will get there first and get the console market as well

1. Sony and Microsoft release powerful next-generation consoles.
2. Nintendo releases an underpowered gimmick.
3. PS and Xbox fanboys decry Nintendo console as being gimmicky and stupid, destined for failure
4. Nintendo console sells like crazy
5. Sony and MS panic and release add-on that recreates Nintendo gimmick
6. Fanboys decry add-ons as gimmicky
7. Gimmicks add-ons sell like crazy

You forgot to add the part where the fanboys annouce that soon Google/Apple/favtechcompanyofthemoment will enter the consoles race and put everyone out of business
 
Wouldn't be all that crazy in the near future to have something like the PS Vita come out that you dock and play on your TV with a dedicated PS3 style controller.

Probably this.

And graphics are very important have been since the dawn of console time. This will be much quicker than the xbox 360/ps3. Skyrim is a good game, but when you look at it and some of the graphics you're able to tell that yep it's half decade old hardware.

This console won't be another way to play angry birds, people get way too upset over console rumors 🙂

Wait, where does it say that it won't use physical media? I think that's a given; not only do some people have bandwidth caps, but a few people don't even have high speed internet, or at least it's not fast enough to download an entire game in a reasonable amount of time.

Hell in my own experience, my Xbox downloads stuff about 1/3 as fast as my computer does, and they're both on 100M ethernet, not wireless.

The rumor states it will be a tablet based system with a dock. I don't see that happening as most tablets lack any form of optical drives. Let alone, enough HDD to store multiple games. That alone discredits this rumor.

It doesn't say dock, it says base station. The base station could easily have an optical drive. It could be the same as the current xbox, just with a wireless tablet as well.
 
It's nice to see Microsoft out ahead on this one and stealing ideas from Nintendo earlier in the next gen console's lifetime. :thumbsup:

could be a selling point, as blu ray is for ps3. buy the xbox and you get a tablet too
 
8:56pm cdt anandtech.com forums i am claiming that someday the latest gen console will be entirely virtual, rendered in a massive cloud computer system. like onlive but its called xbox cloud

When old people stop saying "flat screen" in front of TV, as if some of us are still watching old tube tvs.

I don't see MS putting a real tablet into the xbox, it serves no point at all. It can't pretend to compete with an ipad or other first rate tablet, especially since in three years it would be old. It's expensive, it's got less power than a large unit. I don't buy it.
