XBox 720 Info Leaked

Unless they include the Xenon CPU and Xenos GPU, no. Software emulation, especially at the level the 360 is really too complicated any other way. But the amount of digital content means they may end up having to keep those chips in. Who knows how much extra it might cost though, $50? $100?

You should read the article. 🙂

There's some information in that article that really makes me question the validity:

The document strongly suggests that this base hardware will be available in multiple configurations with different feature sets, using an the architecture is "designed to be scalable in frequency/number of cores," and a "modular design to facilitate SKU updates later in lifecycle."

Why would Microsoft want to mess with the processing capability of the unit? It seems the worst thing for developers would be to have multiple performance points to consider. Also, if the most cut-down variant sells the most, won't most developers just develop specifically aiming for that one? Wait... maybe then the devoted console gamers (the ones that would buy the fancy one) will see how us PC gamers suffer with things like low-resolution textures. 😛

Also, consider the following:

Microsoft is supposedly targeting a 2013 holiday season launch for the system in a $299 bundle with new Kinect hardware

+

A vague "snapshot" of the Yukon architecture for the system shows a core application architecture featuring six to eight 2Ghz ARM/x86 cores, with two additional ARM/x86 cores powering the system OS and three PowerPC cores handling backward-compatibility functions.

$299 with all of that hardware and a new Kinect bundled in? Although, I guess the six to eight cores would push people toward believing that AMD's Bulldozer is certainly an option.

The improved hardware will allow for "true 1080p and full 3D" output, along with flexible resizing and compositing, according to the document.

What 3D mode are they talking about? HDMI is rather neutered in regard to 3D as the highest resolution (1080p) only runs at 24Hz, and that's not really meant for games anyway. You'd want 720p60 for that.

If devs can handle infinite specs on PC, they can handle 2-3 specs on a fixed platform. End result will just be a model that can support higher resolution, frame rate, or higher precision or density effects. It's not a crazy idea, it's an awesome one.

The document is from 2010, so they were projecting forward what things would cost 2013. Their projections may be a little....optimistic. But it's not really evidence towards a fake.

They're either talking about 720p60 exactly as you say, or the 1080p60 that almost certain to come with HDMI 1.5. This is exactly where the scalable spec can come into play - original box is 720p 3D. 2015 Xbox 720 Pro is released that can handle 1080p60 3D. No real work to do for the devs, MS gets to sell an expensive box, enthusiasts get to buy it, everyone is happy.

The only really bizarre thing is that article to me is that the console could potentially HSDPA....a 3G cellular protocol.

But, seeing how their lawyers have been trying to take this document down everywhere it's popped up....it's real. It's a projection, a vision for the future from 2010 that's subject to revision and change by release....but this is basically what we're going to see.

I'm thinking that while some of the stuff in the article is going to happen, it won't be as great as it sounds. I doubt they will do all that for an entry price of $300. I do like that they have a blu-ray drive planned, hopefully that comes true.

Same here, definitely happy to see something that conflicts with that stupid rumor about it not having an optical drive at all. I'm also pleased to see plans for backward compatibility, hopefully that is true, but it's hard to believe they are going to include the whole triple-core PowerPC CPU just to do it.

Sony did with the PS2 and early PS3s, Sega did with the Genesis, and Nintendo did with the GBA and DS.

Yep. Not hard to believe at all, actually quite the sensible thing to do. So total CPU core count for games is actually 9-11, cause it would be crazy to leave that processor idle. I'm sure crafty devs will find a use for it.

actually, it would be stupid for them to do that as at some point, just like the PS3, the backwards compatability was removed to lower costs. It will happen with the xbox as well going forward.

As we've learned, backwards compatibility is not something a majority of people want, plus it makes the consoles cheaper which is good as well.

While it's tempting to make that power available, it means never being able to remove those CPUs to reduce costs.

True...but the marginal cost of keeping it in only gets smaller over time. PS3 was the only console ever to remove BC, but it was also an overengineered and overpriced mess in the first place.

wii also lost BC for gamecube games, as well as the ability to watch DVD movies, all with $0 price reduction to consumers.

Yeah...maybe it is unlikely it'll ever be used for anything but BC then. I do hope that they make a much wider range of devices this time. This whole differentiation by HDD size thing is nonsense. BC should always stick around in some form. I literally only have so much space beneath my TV. Being able to remove one of the systems is a major selling point, to begin with at least.

😕 I'm didn't think the wii was ever able to play DVDs, apart from a community hack or something.

i had thought that one of the SKU's in europe played DVD movies, and when they removed BC they removed that as well. could be wrong about that though.

DSi dropped GBA support and the Power Base Converter only fits in the first version of the Genesis/Megadrive but a dremel can fix that.

Ooooh, a third generation failbox!!!! Sorry, twice in a row means I can live without the next one. Just what I need, another overpriced & overhyped piece of crap sitting on my entertainment center waiting to meltdown....no thanks.

Ok you won't be missed.
