@ $79.99 shipped is already a great price but if you receive a 7% discount from buy.com via email than it is $74.39.
YMMV is applicable.

Do people really buy these expensive adapters? Just set a network with powerline adapters and wired hubs. Or just get a $30 wireless bridge and connect it to your XBox 360 with an ethernet cable. Pretty simple and cheap.

If you can specifically suggest a less expensive alternative method known working then your comment is welcome. Otherwise this sounds like a thread crapping.

That was kinda thread-crapping. But he is right. You can pick up a BUFFALO WHR-G54S for ~$40. Then you can load it with free 3rd party firmware like DD-WRT that will let you run it as a "bridge" to your main wireless router. I did it for my XBOX but I used a Linksys WRT54G instead of the Buffalo. It works well, plus has extra ports if you want to plug anything else in. I'd probably use the Buffalo if I had to do it again, because it is a bit cheaper and is supposed to be just as good if not better.

And here is a link to an IGN article about it:

It used to be available on www.geeks.com and amazon, but I think it's a little harder to find these days. Good Luck!

woot carries them too for about 30-40 dollars

I'm sorry if your feelings got hurt, but forums are for comments. Get over it. This is not thread craping and I made no specific alternatives because these units are pretty much anywhere... I also hate when companies like Microsoft prey on the ignorance of their customers by pushing an overpriced piece of equipment. Here are some examples of alternatives.

To connect this to your network (wired or wireless) and for the highest performance use two of these powerline adapters for $50 total:

Netgear XE102

Or for just $25 get this for your 802.11b network:

Play Link

You can also get any 802.11g wireless bridge and use the ethernet port in the XBox 360. I hope everyone got enough information so they can avoid the unnecessary expense of the Microsoft WiFi adapter. Thanks to all.

I'm using ZyXEL wireless-g routers to link my ReplayTV and other remote equipment to the base wireless station. These routers can be had for $50 from CompUSA any time and the current ZyXEL supports bridging and wireless distribution system (WDS). I'm using in WDS with no problems. And Oh, BTW, these routers go on sale for $10-$20 after rebates every month or so. I have purchased four over the last 6 months for $10 and $15. Rebates came in fine. One e-bate from CompUSA (this is SIMPLE to submit and quick to get) and one MIR to ZyXEL that has come promptly.

You can easily find a buy.com $5 off coupon floating around and maybe checkout using google checkout to save another $15 off the listed price.

I guess that make it.... $64.99 or something around there.

For some people not having to mess with sometimes finicky routers/bridges is worth the extra money to buy this adapter so it is a HOT DEAL since it rarely goes on sale.

That being said, when I saw how much this thing cost a few months ago I bought a 50' network cable for $10 and ran it around the room under the baseboard and carpet instead :)

I also bought a Zyxel P-330W for ten bucks after rebates if I ever want to play with it as a bridge to my X-550. I have the Wii set up to the X-550 already but have only used it for updates.

Just to add, the original xbox adapter is plug and play on the 360 and works perfect. They routinely go for around $40 on ebay

why it's worth it?
- matching look
- easy hook-up
- easy setup
- doesn't need external power
- supports 802.11a (!)

but if ur cheap like me, u wouldn't even pay a dime for it
I use Windows ICS - it's free! A bit of a hassle to setup the security/firewall ports, but it's as good as any.
Of course, u would need to have a nearby PC in the first place (in my case, it's my HTPC)

EDIT: I think above all, if I ever to buy it, it'd be for the 802.11a compliant.
My house is jamming with all kind of 2.4GHz sh!t, it'd be nice to move some to 5.8GHz..

Logitech Play Link works too.
And it operates in the 900MHz range.

dlink G820 gaming adapter $58 free shipping at newegg (using this one now with my 360)

Yep, the 802.11a was the biggie for me. Got a A/G router and have the 360 sitting on the A band.

It is a breeze to setup and blends in nicely. If you can get it for $75 or less and you want to use the 802.11a, I'd say it is worth it.

Marked for later. I'd love to get an XBOX360, but drilling a hole in the floor to run my connection downstaris is really holding me back... along with the $75 price tag on the wireless adapter.

I just use a linksys wireless access point to connect my 360 and tivo wireless, cost me only $25 bucks

OK, I'm a little bit confused... an access point can be used as a bridge? Why are bridges more expensive, then? The way I was reading it, an access point seemed to be intended to be hooked to your wired router to provide wireless access.

I already have a nice wireless router - a DGL-4300, but my kids have taken our PS2 and old Xbox upstairs (the 360 won't be moving from the HDTV), and their PCs use wireless - but now those two consoles no longer have network connections. It would be cool to play Halo between the 360 and the original Xbox, so I'm looking at wireless solutions to hook it up when he's running it from his TV.

So.... I can get a wireless access point for $15 - will this work? Do I just need to hook it to a PC, configure the encryption/security I'm using on my wireless router, then hook it up to the console (or a wired router to both of the consoles)?

Definitely worthwhile for the 802.11a support. If you don't need that, there are probably more economical alternatives.

As for the confusion about APs vs. bridges - you're entirely correct, BenJeremy. The thing is, some AP and router hardware can be used as a bridge.

I wasn't going to get one either, but a friend took me to the MS Employee store and for $60 I went for it. Sure, I could get a modable router/bridge for $10-20 less. But having it snap on the back of the 360 (and match), no extra power cable/brick to deal with, zero configuration, and the ability to move to A if I ever desire to, makes it worth it.

Would I pay retail for this thing? No. But does ANYONE in ATHD pay retail for ANYTHING?

I second or third the Playlink suggestion. I paid ~$25, and it works like a champ. *No* configuration whatsoever - just plugged it in and it worked. I've recently moved my Xbox 360 to the second floor, and it works great from there as well. This weekend I needed to temporarily network a PC - plugged in the Playlink to the PC.. voila! wireless access!

Last I checked, aren't those limited to 1.5Mbps?

For some that may be no big deal, but I think I'll want a faster solution because I intend to use my 360 Elite as a Media Player Extender.

Yeah, the spec say 1.5Mbps. That seems to be fine for my purposes, at least so far.

I don't get the whole Media Player Extender thing.. what does it do?

Allows you to stream video/music/pictures from your PC to your 360. Works great. 1.5mbps wouldn't be enough for video though.

Ah, okay. I've no need for that, so the cheapie solution works for me. I didn't want to spend the $$ on this adapter after having bought the Xbox 360 (for some reason, I assumed it came with wireless built in like a Wii). This price is good though, for those who want/need the higher speed and whatever else this offers.
