Wife and daughter got me a 360 for Fathers Day. Here's the setup situation I'm in with it in reference to the wireless setup.

Our computer is upstairs in one of the bedrooms and is hooked up via cable modem. The 360 is setup downstairs with the entertainment center. My questions about the setup concern the wireless connection.

What other setups do you all recommend other than the Microsoft Brand wireless connector and a wireless router upstairs? Is it possible to use something other than the Microsoft brand or am i forced to use that one in particular? Also, any certain brand router that works better than others with the 360?

Is their much difference in setting up the wireless connection on the 360 between the microsoft brand or another brand?

You aren't forced to use the MS wireless adapter. You can us pretty much any wireless device that will hook up via ethernet. The MS wireless adapter is the only one that will work when plugged into a USB port on the 360.

Even the wireless adapter for the original Xbox will work.

I personally use the Xbox 360 Wireless Network Adapter by Microsoft along with the Linksys WRT330n Gaming Router and it works perfectly fine for me... except when my internet itself dies then I am screwed ;)

You can get a wireless bridge. I would do a search on the brand, but I BELEIVE you can get them for about 30 bucks generally. Another cheap alternative, this is what I have set up is. If you have a compy near the 360, buy a crossover cable, and enable INTERNET CONNECTION SHARING (ICS) on the machine and you can use the wireless from the computer, so if you have a laptop you can bring downstairs or something. And if it helps any, I have no lag issues using this method, but I am sure this also depends on your location etc.

The xbox official site, and gamefaqs sometimes provide some quick answers to which wireless bridges work. The official USB adaptor is too damn expensive, but an easy solution...

I had a spare linksys router around that I made into a wireless bridge and now I have my Xbox and Xbox360 both hooked up to that with a network cable, and then my wireless bridge picks up the wireless network in my apartment.

works like a charm :)

I use a Linksys 802.11g wireless bridge. Seems to work fine most of the time. I do have trouble connecting to games sometimes, but it isn't a huge issue.

That's what I do. PS2, Xbox, 360, and PC all connected to a single router that's bridged with another. Why have four wireless adapters when you can have just one!

Is it at all possible to run an ethernet cable through the wall (or even outside the house) into that room with the 360 (or up from the floor)? I know it might seem like too much, but we did a much larger project at my own house (100' cable to my PS3). The quality of the ethernet connection is so much better/faster than any wi-fi.

To actually answer your question, I would go for the wireless router as a bridge. That would be your best wireless option. After that, go for a non-Microsoft adapter (not sure what is compatible).

But to pay $100 for an official wi-fi adapter? That's a joke.

Bump...

I am having the same issue. I have an extra router (D Link, .11b router). I just purchased a newer Trendnet router, .11g. I will be using the trendnet as the main router connected to the cable modem.

Question is, can I simply use any router to bridge to the main router like my DLink? And how exactly will I bridge? (I dont have the setup with me right now, but will be at home in a few days). So i dont really need to purchase anything, right?
What I am confused about is how exactly will the DLink connect to the internet through trendnet? I thought the router would be looking at the WAN port for an internet connection.

Some retail router's firmware will let you bridge, others, like the ones I use, need to have a third-party firmware installed. I am currently using a Buffalo and Linksys router, flashed with the Tomato and DD-WRT firmwares, respectively.

Last I looked, the DD-WRT/Tomato firmware compatible Buffalo routers were $50 (for G). Worth the money IMO.

His Xbox is probably running XBMC.

Or maybe he wants to play Xbox games that won't run on the 360.

Well, so my DLink DI-614+ router does not support bridging, so it doesnt work. I am gonna try to bite on another deal that comes by soon which supports bridging

I have a buffalo router so i brought a buffalo ethernet converter to go along with it. I have 2 wired networks joined togther with this set up..

The buffalo one is great since it's a 4 port switch buffalo ethernet converter

I also got two of these on sale ( ~$30) , and one is currently on my 360 in the basement. dlink wireless gaming adapter

with the buffalo, using wpa-tkip encryption if still pull all of my 15mb down from my fios 15/2 internet connection.

I also made sure they all use the same "turbo" mode 108mbps rather then the HSD 125 mbps spec. for Buffalo for some reason they switched from using the 108mbps burst mode in there older g equipment to the 125mbps HSD format in there new mimo equipment, therefore not allowing there older equipment anyway to use the burst mode... I assume they switched chipsets providers for there mimo implementation.

It was for both, but now that SF:AC works on Xbox360 it's used only for XBMC :D

I have a US Robotics Wireless Bridge available , but I just ran a cable, as my server is also connected on the same switch and transferring multiple gigabytes over wireless is painful... too painful.
