That's basically it. Can I use any USB wifi "antenna", "receiver" etc... or is there some kind of firmware on the M$ version that is needed for it to work.

I'm not interested in using a wireless to ethernet bridge/adapter.

Thanks

Nope, you can only use a gaming bridge or firmware'd router or the like. No USB wireless, that'd just be too easy.

Ahhh, you are pissed at the price of the damned thing. So was I.

After reading into alternatives, I concluded that the spending the $100 was the best thing to do. It costs alot, but I have to admit that it is pretty much bullet proof. The alternatives could have saved me $40 or so but everything I read usually ended up in headaches of one sort of another. Cheaper USB wireless adapters usually ended in stories of flaky behavior.

If i had to do it all over again, I'd shell out the $100 again. it's quick, it's easy, needs almost no configuring and it works. All you do is snap it into your 360 and give the 360 your wireless security info like WEP.

I would never pay $100 for that...it's such a ripoff. As easy as it is, I'd never support Microsoft trying to rip me off like that. It's completely ridiculous.

However, if I could find a used one for much cheaper, that I'd consider.

The MS usb device can not do WPA2, that was a deal breaker for me. I ended up buying a bridge and hooking that up via ethernet and configuring it to use wpa2.

If I had to do it over again, Id buy a WRT54GL, flash dd-wrt on it and set it up to be the bridge and save 50 bucks.

How to guide

 That's how I hooked my brother's system up. Only downside is the computer has to be on to play on Live.

There really aren't any better alternatives...

- You can either do some jury rig with a laptop, which is fine if you have one close to your console.

- Hack a wireless router into a wireless access point. http://ask.metafilter.com/1058...-as-a-Wireless-Adapter YMMV... This page ends with the following quote.

I got so frustrated, I bought the (MS) adapter, and I'm not even LOOKING at the 360 until tomorrow.

- Get some bulky thing like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16873999102

- Or you could spend an additional $17 (or less on ebay), and get the real thing: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16874103016

The nice thing about the MS adapter is that it's small and it clips onto the back of your console, so it barely noticeable. The fact of the matter is that console accessories are expensive. That's how they can manage to charge you that much less than a PC, but you won't find anything as small, easy, and reliable as the MS wireless adapter for your 360 at any price.

It's ridiculous how Microsoft has still yet to bundle wireless with their console. They are trying to Sony us with accessories that should be standard on all systems.

In this regard the PS3 > Xbox360.

Thanks for the replies. Looks like ebay + M$cashback is where I'm heading.

That's what I did, and it works great. Last I checked, though, DD-WRT doesn't support WPA2 in bridging mode. I could never get it to work and I saw something on their forums about it when I researched it after I tried. It's been nearly a year since I set mine up. Have they added WPA2 support in bridging mode?

I just bought a basic Linksys WRT54G router for about $50, installed DD-WRT firmware on it, and set it up as a wireless access point. It works great and gives me multiple ethernet connections for both my 360 and my TiVo HD.

Are you using WPA2 by chance?

I ended up just running an ethernet cable from my Desktop to the 360. I think doing something similar with a desktop or laptop is best if feasible, but if you 360 is by itself, perhaps in some sort of entertainment room, then the Microsoft wireless adapter doesn't seem to bad. I just wish it wasn't so pricy!

This I agree with. I understand that they want to be able to offer a lower priced system, but MS should at least make different versions of the 360 with different built in features. As it is now, the Elite and the Arcade are the exact same thing minus the case and a removable hard drive. It would be nice if the Elite was actually something a bit more "Elite" other than an accessories bundle. HDMI isn't even an Elite exclusive anymore (rightfully so).

I lawled at the $100, that is just completely and unabashed theft/silliness asking that for the thing. Their margin must be stratospheric on it.

Two days ago I drilled a hole in my floor and ran a cat5 straight to my router. Woot!

I did the same thing, except I used a $30 Asus WL520GU.

I can't remember which security settings I'm using, but I'm pretty sure it's WPA2 (AES?).
