Xbox 360 wireless adapter proprietary?

$99.99 for an 802.11g wireless adapter seems a bit on the fvck you M$$$ side when you can get a PC USB adapter for one third the price. Now maybe if Bill Gates himself sat in his basement with a soldering iron piecing these b!tches together with TLC... but I doubt it.

Any reason why picking up a different adapter wouldn't work? I suppose if there's anyone that can lock down their product enough to not allow 3rd party parts to work it's Microsoft, but what do you guys think? How's it work out on the current Xbox?

And what are your opinions on the 360 being hack-able? Apparently it's supposed to be able to interface with Windows MCE 05 PC's, could that possibly make it easier to software hack, rather than hardware like on the original Xbox? I'd like to see somebody open up the USB ports for mouse and keyboard support (CoD2 on analog suuucks), or even a USB hard drive. We could probably get external 2.5" HDs twice the size of the 360 one for the $100 they're charging.

If there was a good chance we'd be seeing hacks like this in the near future I'd consider picking up a Core system over the Platinum. Let us Discuss.

As far as the wireless adapter goes, I would think that in theory, you should be able to use a USB adapter, but don't count on it. Microsoft rigged it somehowSDFDSFSDFSDFSDF

they want you to buy their accessories. every console maker has done it. they don't care if you already have one, they just see the $$..

if you can find a wireless adapter that plugs into the ethernet jack, that'll work fine. the system will have no idea it's talking to a wireless adatper.

as far as interfacing with MCE, is it not just using networking protocols? If so then I don't beleive that would make it any easier to hack.

but on that note, it's only a matter of time before people figure out how to load games off the hard drive, and use their own peripherals. Since emulation profiles will be stored on the hard disk, I could also see people with dev kits making custom profiles for xbox games.
