My cousin bought his 360 a year ago and it died. He no longer has his receipt. He bought it from Game Stop and I believe he said he used cash. Is there any way to get Microsoft to warranty the machine?

If they won't do it for free, is there the possibility that he can at least maybe even pay the $120 or $140 to get it repaired? It's cheaper than buying an entirely new Xbox.

Did he get RRoD? If he did, he can at least give MS a call. Since the problem is will publicized, it should give him some leverage when negotiating with MS. He should give them a call, and the worst thing that can happen is paying the fee to get it repaired.

He should also try calling the Gamestop where he purchased the console and see if they keep record of transactions.

He's done the latter. He said he'll try calling MS tomorrow. The GS he bought it from told him they only keep records for up to a month and then they purge. I guess if they ever get audited they'd be up sh!t creek!

I bought mine last year as well and got the rrod. I called MS, got it replaced for free and got a new console in two weeks. Since they started the new warranty recently, its covered 3 years from the date of purchase, so you should be fine.

I didn't have to give any receipt information when I sent mine in. They didn't even ask for a date of purchase. They just asked for the Serial number and my name, address, etc. to register the thing...then they sent me a box to send it in on. Very simple overall. He shouldn't have to pay a dime.

I bought mine used here on the forums and got the RROD 3 days later. Called MS and apparently this was the reruned one, the original one also had the RROD and the guy I bought it from had told me it was a replacement from another 360. I just called MS, told them I bought it used, they asked for the original owners name, address and phone number, which I provided, and they re-registered it to me, sent me the coffin, sent it in, got a brand new one back (thank God, no RROD, yet) and then the 3 year warranty hit, so Im good for a while. MS, although they should have fixed this issues LONG ago, is very good with its customer service. I guess being a trillion dollar company doesnt hurt! :)

Unfortunately, I do not think that Microsoft warranties consoles from the date of purchase, only the date of shipment. When I had my first 360 die on me, and I bought a second, I called in to get the extended warranty. The lady I spoke to already had an "in service" date based on the serial number, and it was a week or two before I had bought the system. Luckily, I decided to wait on the extended warranty when she told me that I could extend it at any point before the original 90 days were up.
