So I just got the red rings of death the other day. My question is this, can I still use the warranty even if the xbox is all jacked up? The plastic on the outside is all warped, chipped, scratched, etc. Anyone have any problems with their warranty unit being rejected?

My guess is as long as its never been opened you should be fine. I mean the case being scratched up and rough looking likely didn't cause the RROD. Even though MS might try to get out of it by saying it was abused when they know good and well what caused it.

Curious how did the case get all jacked up?

BTW its a dead Xbox might as well try regardless.

i think you'll be ok, you have nothing to lose since Microsoft pays shipping both ways

I put it in the oven for about 15 minutes at 275F

Ordinarily I would think you're joking, but given that MS just started selling premiums with HDMI I'm going to say that was a really stupid way to try to kill your Xbox prematurely.

haha, I was getting the RROD before I put it in the oven. I shoved it in there to see if I could get the solders to melt back into place. I don't think I had it hot enough in there though. Any hotter and all of the plastic would be melted on the bottom of the oven. I figure I'll just send it to MS and they can look at it and go WTF and decide if they want to give me a refurb.

If you take it apart and dip it into a tub of molten solder that should get all the solder to melt back into place. works every time!

I'm just curious, but if the machine was still under warranty why would you do something so drastic as putting it in a hot oven instead of sending it in for repairs for free?

I"ve seen where other people have voided warranty's instead of getting them fixed free and I don't understand it

If you would have just put the PS in a bowl of cold water you could have avoided the problem altogether !

OK, uh... sorry to call you stupid twice in the same thread, but even if you got it hot enough to "melt back into place," what did you think was going to happen to the thousands of other solder points in the system?

The solder would just get soft and ball up. The solder won't flow anywhere on the board. Again, I was about a hundred degrees shy of the melting point of solder.

I redid the thermal paste (I used arctic silver) and it's been working fine ever since. Takes patience but worth a try if you have no other choice of getting it to work.
