Xbox 360 VGA Connector

I'm planning to get an Xbox 360 soon and wanted to take advantage of it's HD capabilites. However, I do not currently have an HDTV and can't really afford to have one.
I was wondering how the Xbox 360 VGA HD AV Cable would work on my monitor(Mitsubishi Diamond Pro 2070sb)

How would I get audio to work?
The audio connectors are component input and I don't get how you would be able to connect it to any standard sound card.(Audigy 2 Value)

Also, I'm concerned about whether or not you would be able to run at anything above 60hz, which seems like the standard HDTV refresh rate. This would really give me major headaches if I had to play 1080i@60hz on a CRT. Is it possible to change the refresh rate on the Xbox 360? Or would I have to buy a LCD in order to avoid headaches? Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Previous poster was on the right track but you want a female rca to 3.5mm cable like this one. just plug in the mini jack side into the Line In input on the soundcard and use the sound mixer in windows to adjust the line input volume.

You wont be able to adjust the refresh rate but from my experiance its never been an issue, it doesnt seem to flicker like when a PC is connected, I have a VGA adapter for my gamecube and it looks great on my 24" Sony FW900 widescreen CRT. Looking forward to seeing Xbox360 on it.

Heres a few pics I took with my gamecube connected, unfortunately gamecube games dont support any higher than 480P res but it still looks decent. Xbox 360 will definately look a lot nicer in 720P / 1080i.

Thanks a bunch for the help JRW! The only thing I don't get is how it won't flicker. I mean is there any way to avoid the flickering or do you just not notice it? I am also think of buying the FW900 because the image would have those fat black borders on my DP2070SB. The gamecube actually looks nice, how is sound quality compared to a standard TV?

Im not sure why the flicker isnt noticable with gamecube connected, but its the same with a standard CRT television, they all run 60Hz as well and dont have flicker issues. maybe gaming consoles are somehow designed to reduce this flicker effect knowing most people have them connected to 60hz displays.

Sound quality depends on what kind of PC speakers you're running , I'm using Logitech 5500s so of course the sound is much better than coming through standard TV speakers. With Xbox360 ill be able to connect an Optical cable directly to the Z5500's for dolby digital 5.1 surround.

That adaptor also supports digital audio with its optical output. If your Audigy card has a optical in port like mine does you could just use that.

I would imagine so - or HDMI, which can be used with a simple adapter to connect to a DVI monitor. The only consideration would be if the HDMI/DVI outputs were HDCP, but for video games I kinda doubt they'd do that.

3rd party yeah, Best Buy has an HDMI cable listed for 360, i'd imagine a DVI cable will also be made, it's gonna be a while before we see MS release their own HDMI or DVI cables, they're most likely waiting for when it's time to release a 360 with an HD-DVD or Blu-Ray drive.

That's good, because on my Dell 2005fpw, the 720P output of the Xbox was ****** via VGA and I'm hoping DVI would make it better.

though it could clearly be a system capability factor. What do you think?

there isn't much advantage of getting an HDMI - DVI hook up since smart people will use 720p (1080i isn't fluid enough for most intense games) 1280x720 isn't that high of a resolution, so the sharpness detected from a DVI input vs a VGA isn't going to be noticeable. Most monitors that have a DVI input have a VGA input; it would save you time and money to just buy the HD/AV VGA cable.

I would also like to mention that buying a $200 MONSTER cable is absolutely ridiculous and doesn't provide any advantage over its $5 counterpart when dealing with cables under 25 feet.

but if people still insist on buying HDMI/DVI stuff I highly recommend MonoPrice.com they have cheap quality cables/converters of every imaginable thing (BNC to RCA anyone?)

JRW: I would really like to see your pictures but the links dont work, I am actually going to buy a FW900 in a few days, I was wondering if you could give me the "viewable" dimensions of the monitor like the width of the actual screen and height (I get everywhere that its width is 22.5" but they dont tell the height, just the height of the monitor 19.7") and is it really a 16:10 aspect ratio? because it still looks very square to me. If its width is really 22.5" and its height corresponds to the 16:10 aspect ratio then it should be around 14" or am I entirely off and they actually measure the diagonal at 22.5" (which is what they shouldn't do when measuring widescreen displays)

The monitor is 22.5" wide from side to side(including the casing), When measuring only the screen itself side to side its 19.1" and 22.5" when measuring the screen diagonaly. measuring only the screen height itself from top to bottom is about 12.3" ,The recommended resolution is 1920x1200 so its definately a 16:10 display. This site has more info. also heres a pic of a Dell 2405FPW LCD and FW900 side by side.

I fixed the links in my previous post so they should work now and heres a few more random shots I took from the monitor:

Half Life 2

Call of Duty 2

Far Cry

great, thanks for the reply, that helps out a lot, ive been running windows off my 8 year old 28inch tv for the past month and its been not very easy. BTW I heard that using the BNC input for your monitor will help over vga, its a $5 cable on that one site (VGA to BNC) might be worth a shot especially for a guy like you that clearly likes the best of the best (thats one serious rig you're hauling)

for the rest of you... sorry I got so off topic :p
