Xbox 360 update... bricked my console?

My old ass Xbox which worked perfectly all these years is now bricked because of the update... is there anything I can do?

The update installed, I browsed for movies on my server and the screen went green.

Now when I turn it on, the intro Xbox/Microsoft thing loads, then glitches and makes loud noises.... what can I do?

This is bullshit.

I went through the troubleshooting guide and it's telling me I need a new powersupply.... really? This thing never failed me and all of the sudden with a update, the thing is bricked.

There was something said how the update would brick people - might want to check your email, they were supposed to send out notifications.

never got one.... I emailed support... maybe I will get a new Xbox ... I doubt it.

I thought the nature of that failure had to do with the update bricking certain toshiba disc drives in the console, not fubaring the power supply.

I believe they were lite-on drives, but yes the known failure was for the drive. If your PSU is screwed then so are you.

My PS2 didn't last 3 years either. Those drives were notorious for failing until they came out with the slim version.

After about a year I had to fight my NES every single time to play a game. Here's a test to see if you're blinded by nostalgia: if the thought of blowing into those f'ing cartridges and using q-tips to get them to read right doesn't fill you with frustration then you have a very rose-tinted look on how well the old consoles "worked".

Fact is this generation has been the most popular, most taxing on hardware, and longest lasting. Things don't last forever and when a generation lasts this long then it'll feel like the units aren't holding up as well. There was the early RROD problem, but after that initial stint these consoles have been well in line with previous gens in how long they last before problems.

i was looking online to find something like this, and i just wanted to share my thoughts and experiences on it.

ive got a 2008 xbox 360. ive had it for several years and a few weeks ago after the update it stopped reading game disks, but played dvds. and sometimes not even playing dvds or detecting a disk.

i called MS and the guy asked for my serial number and manufacturer date. i gave him a little bit of information (name, address, phone number) then told him my problem, and he told me that my console was eligible for a free repair or it will be replaced with a new 360 slim, one controller, 250GB hard drive and a one year subscription to xbox live for free. he then said "so cross your fingers man" then laughed lol! i still get to keep my 60GB HD that came with my xbox, all i gotta do is send my console and power supply in.

i have a lite-on drive. so maybe its only with lite-on. regardless, if yours is doing this, call em up and tell them. they are being very nice about it because the update they are doing is extremely important for piracy.

cross your fingers that the update bricks your drive! lol

I just called... they are telling me the console has a hardware defect. and it's out of warranty and they want 119 bucks to fix it..... sigh. do you think if I ask for a manager I can get it fixed?

They've already documented the drive issue and are replacing consoles for that. Don't you think that if enough people were also getting PSU errors that they'd give you a new PSU or console? It was on its way out and finally broke, just like how people claim a new game RRODed their box... it was going to happen anyway. Just because it went when you played that game or updated your system doesn't mean the update broke it.

I'm not saying it's impossible, just so unlikely that they don't have very many people claiming issues. A manager will not help you any more than the person you already talked to.

I doubt there are many 2006 Xbox 360s out there for a update to break them.... they all died back in 2006...

well that sucks, guess I won't be getting a new 360.

If it's just a PSU issue you might be able to get one of those somewhere maybe. Might look around online before giving up entirely.

The PSU is fine, I was on the phone with support.

The update before the last one bricked my Xbox. Ms wanted to charge me to fix it. I forced a rrod and had them replace it as the rrod had a three year warranty.
