Seagate to provide LD25 hard drives for Xbox 360

New discs designed specifically for gaming and home entertainment systems

Microsoft's Xbox 360 is set to use hard drive technology from storage specialist Seagate, with the company announcing that its new LD25 2.5" discs are to be used as the removable drives for the console.

Seagate announced the LD25 range of drives in a statement last night, describing the new drives as specifically designed for use in game systems, home entertainment devices and small form factor PCs.

The drives will be available in 20GB, 30GB and 40GB variants, with the Xbox 360 set to ship with the 20GB version of the hardware - which will be used for applications ranging from downloading game content to storing video messages and custom soundtracks.

"The hard drive extends the gaming experience on Xbox 360," explained Microsoft's corporate VP of Xbox hardware, Todd Holmdahl. "From downloading trailers, new game levels, maps, weapons, vehicles, and more to supporting custom playlists in every game and storing video messages from friends, Seagate's LD25 Series 2.5-inch hard drive brings gaming and digital media together for the ultimate entertainment experience."

According to Seagate, the new drives use a technology called DynaPlay, which optimises their performance to reduce power consumption and improve media streaming and security, while motors using a technology called SoftSonic mean that the drive runs more quietly than its competitors.

Seagate joins an impressive line-up of technology partners who are working with Microsoft on the new console, including CPU provider IBM, graphics chipset designer ATI and wireless solution provider RTX Telecom.

So now my question is when is MS going to announce if ALL xbox360's are going to come w/this 20gb HD, or if its going to be the "premium" xbox and sell for more than the one w/out the HD.

I remember MS said something about 2 versions shipping, 1 with the HD, and one with out (with the option of adding it later). so only time will tell ...

Unless the 360 has flash memory, it basically has to have a HD for save game files, Live downloads, etc. Perhaps the premium XBox comes with a 30/40GB hd.

There were rumors of two (even three) versions of the 360 prior to the MTV Event. After the MTV Event, MS has said there is only going to be one version and it is going to come with a HD.

Go back and check Joystiq.com or other game sites. They pretty much all cover it.

I do believe it's detachable, so theoretically you can upgrade your drive in the future.

Correct. It is going to be detachable. So you can upgrade to a larger drive or take it over to a friend's house.

The PS3 specs list a HD slot but no confirmation on whether or not a HD will be included.

The Revolution is using built-in flash memory along with flash memory upgrades.

Yeah, they're only going to ship one version at launch, but will almost certainly come out with more versions later, some that will probably have larger hard drives and possibly even more features (tivo maybe, depends on what is popular).

Rossman, hook it up...i need a 200 GB 2.5" HD by this holiday season.
i dont want to spend more than $25.

streaming an entire game from your PC would be great for the current/future xbox for backup purposes of course.
i mean, that's how gamecube backups are done.

thats how they WERE done. there are modchips out for GC now that will play games off of mini dvdr's, or you can get a new case for your gamecube that looks identical to the normal GC case, except it opens up to fit a full sized dvd in the drive and works fine w/full sized dvds.

EDIT: linkified.

Impress PC Watch: The PlayStation 3 has some extremely high specifications, but it doesn't come with an HDD. Why?

Ken Kutaragi[Sony Computer Entertainment president]: We're not going to equip [the PS3 with] an HDD by default, because no matter how much [capacity] we put in it, it won't be enough. The next step is definitely network drives.
