I just bought Xbox 360 today. Friggin' awesome in one word. Only have Perfect Dark Zero but it is great so far.

I have a Hitachi 46F510 tv, specs are here.

I set the switch on the component adapter to HDTV and I get a great picture at 480p but I believe my tv can go higher. I try 720p and 1080i but the left side of the display is basically shadowed black and not visible.

Is that what it should look like prior to selecting the higher setting, or does that mean it cannot view at those resolutions.

My tv specs state "virtual 1080i" but I am not even sure what that means.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to select the wrong setting and not be able to see anything to switch it back.

Lets give some birthday help here.

TIA

From what I read it means your TV isn't a true 1080i display.....it downconverts the 1080i signal slightly to match the resolution of the TV. Similarly, it will convert whatever HD format you feed it (480p/720p/1080p) to one that can be displayed.

Does this mean it cannot do 720p as well? This is new territory for me.

I am not complaining because it looks great at 480p but I have never seen 720 or 1080 before and I would like to try if it can.

If I select a reolsution in the Xbox console is un-viewable, will I be able to switch back to 480p? I am so clueless when it comes to HDTV.

make sure it is plugged into a HD input, make sure you have your 360 to output HD.

You'll know when you're getting HD when you see it.

-edit- viper has it nailed. if it is plugged into an input that can accept those inputs you'll be fine. Just change it already.

And then, make sure you get a game that really uses the 360 potential. PDK is pretty bad in that arena. Fun none the less.

-edit- another edit for others reading. Most all modern CRT displays are 1080i and will convert any input to that scanrate.

My tv shows 480p when the xbox component switch is set to HDTV and 480i when set to regular tv. The component cable is going into the component inputs on my tv. I assume that is all I have to set.

Make sure your using the HD cables. If you bought a core console, you will need to purchase the HD cables to output in 720p or 1080i.

I'm a loser. I just did like it and it is now 720p. Looks sweet. On to 1080.

Thanks for the help. Not sure if I can say how much better it looks though...

I don't have a 360 or even and HDTV, but I thought that most people would prefer 720p over 1080i. Is this right?

yeah but the 360 is "native" 720p though isnt it? I thought I read that somewhere.
