If thats true a lot of people are gonna be mad. I don't even think they'll make 360 games onto HD-DVD disks for another 2 or 3 years at least.

Probably not. Looks like it will be priced about $700 or more with everything this rumor listed. Sony tried this with the PSX (a PS2 with Media Center features) in Japan and it failed miserably.

Also, if I remember reading correctly about IPTV service, the 360 won't need to record shows to a hard drive. There is supposed to be a central receiver that does all the recording.

360 games will never make it onto HD DVD, MS would instantly eliminate over 10 million 360 owners as potential game buyers.

If it does get built-in HD DVD, it will only play movies on that format, you've seen how much MS has pushed to stop devs from making the HDD add-on a requirement for games on the 360, allowing games on HD DVD would be a huge turnaround for them.

Games can't be made on HD DVD. Read speed is too slow. Even slower than Blu-Ray. I don't know when they'll be increasing the read speed. Maybe the next next-gen.

C'mon now, you're a smart guy. No way will MS release a $700 console...they're not Sony. HD technology is getting cheaper to manufacture...

It'll be $500 and come with all the features that we want to see in it. The Elite will drop to $400 (if it stays around) and the Pro will drop to $300. Come back in 7-8 months...you'll see. :)

I said 'about'....though I might have been exaggerating a little. $600+ is what I'm thinking. It isn't just the HD DVD drive. Also the 320 GB Hard drive, built-in wi-fi, and what I'm assuming to be HDMI 1.3. That all adds up.

No joke...I'm thinking the 320gb HD would cost more than a Premium 360 if you were to buy it alone (from MS). How much are they charging again for a 120gb drive? Something like a few fingers?

MS is too smart for this. Hell their smartest bottom line move was not integrating wifi and making a proprietary USB adapter. I can't believe all my friends spent $100 for that thing.

I'll just wait for XBox 360 Super Ultra Ultimate Pro Deluxe.

I heard that one doesn't RRoD because of a new air slot strategically placed right below the power button.

4 Actually - Arcade, Pro, Elite, Halo Edition. Though, the Halo Edition is supposed to be a limited run SKU.

Technically, you could say 6 I think since the Arcade and Pro are new versions of the original Arcade and Premium.

As I understand it, Premium and Pro are unofficial names. The "official" name for both is just "Xbox 360." Fans started calling it the "Xbox 360" to further differentiate it from the Xbox 360 Core (official name) or all Xbox 360s collectively. Then Microsoft starting using the "Go Pro" graphic on the box, and fans started using that to differentiate between "Premium" sans HDMI and "Premium" with HDMI. But Microsoft didn't intend for Pro to be the NAME of the model; they used similar labeling on the Arcade (Go Play) and Elite (Go Big). No one calls the Elite the Xbox 360 Big. ;) If you go to Xbox.com, you'll see that they use the Xbox 360 Arcade and Xbox 360 Elite names, but the "Premium"/"Pro" is just called the Xbox 360. They don't even list the Halo Edition in their comparison chart.

So you have:
Xbox 360 (with two functionality-affecting hardware revisions*, at least three internal hardware revisions, and two different bundles)
Xbox 360 Core (with two-functionality-affecting hardware revisions) (discontinued)
Xbox 360 Elite (with at least two internal hardware revisions)
Xbox 360 Arcade (with at least two internal hardware revisions)
Xbox 360 Halo Edition (with at least two internal hardware revisions)

* When I say hardware revisions, I'm including the initial version as well to make it clear how many different versions there were; the functionality-affecting hardware revisions (HDMI) are also included as the internal hardware revisions

Not sure whether the Halo Edition should count as a separate model or just a special edition version of the Xbox 360 ("Premium"/"Pro") model since the hardware is the same.

They couldn't have made this more complicated if they tried. :p

Edit: To be clear, I was agreeing with you but assisting in clearing up a common misconception

You're right. I meant to say that the Arcade and Pro versions are replacing the Core and Premium instead of Arcade and Premium

If just for technical reasons, this will not happen. Disc seek times and transfer rates for HD-DVD aren't up there to perform at the level that games would require today. One of the significant advantages Bluray has in this area is a ~10Mbit/sec faster transfer rate than HD-DVD.

I think it's a tie:
PS3 20GB
PS3 40GB
PS3 60GB w/hardware compatibility
PS3 60GB w/software compatibilty
PS3 80GB

I can see a newer xbox 360 but only as part of their IP tv thing and in the distant future.

Microsoft for the most part has been pretty quite on which format they are backing.

Unlike sony, microsoft barely mentions much about HD-DVD outside of anything to do with their XBOX unit. Sony on the other hand is pushing Blu-ray like crazy, pretty much every chance they get.

the xbox will see the hd-dvd drive built in eventually. Probably at near end of life cycle, unless we get a winner before then.

Even an IPTV product is debatable. Worldwide numbers are relatively low and not worth the investment to bring a product the market.

ATT's U-Verse isn't avaliable in many places in the US.

Unless Microsoft decided to hire some former Sony employees this won't be happening anytime soon if ever.

A xbox with internal wifi, an hd-dvd drive, and a larger HD? Sounds like, I dunno....a PS3? Interesting idea, but fairly pointless if its any more expensive than $499. I doubt it will happen, because they simply dont need to do this to sell consoles.

First, they should start working on making consoles that don't spontaneously implode. Then price their accessories at a reasonable price. $100 for Wifi? Seriously?

But, then even if they release a HD-DVD built-in, then this feature is just in time to be obsolete. Where are the movie studio supports? Just look at all the big guys in the movie industries (Sony, Disney,...), and even WB is going exclusivity for Bluray after the release of Hi-Def disc sale figure after this holiday season. Bluray is going to win the format war, why does XBox want a built-in HD-DVD drive? Unless, it is happening otherwise (you are looking at 7-8 months margin). I doubt MS will be using HD-DVD for game. It will be pointless and stupid.

MS wants nothing more than to drag out the format war as long as possible, so if it really is going blu-rays way, they are going to push HD-DVD hard. They dont want to back the winner, they want to back the loser.

They have their own HD movie business, and every day they can keep this pointless war going is just one day closer to downloadable HD via the 360 pulling the final victory.

Besides, you will NEVER, EVER see a sony BR drive in a 360.

If HD-DVD drive prices have dropped enough that it wont cost them too much, its pretty much a no brainer, as long as they dont charge too much for the system. They wont use it for games, but its a nice bullet point on the box, and takes a bit of steam out of people buying the PS3 as a BR player and not buying a 360 instead.
