Microsoft has said that an Arcade version of the Xbox 360 "S" (aka Slim) was coming but hasn't provided any hints on what it would or wouldn't have and hasn't given a general release date beyond later this year. Now a listing at Amazon's German website may have let some of those details slip.

Previously, Arcade models have not come with much in the way of storage. Either memory cards or internal memory up to 512 MB has been the best the hard drive-less Xbox 360 could offer. The new Xbox 360 Arcade will come with 4GB of memory according to the Amazon listing. This could be internal flash memory but the listing says "Bundle" which indicates it might be a USB thumbdrive. You won't be installing disk-based games to the hard drive with this but it will give you plenty of room for game saves and a few Arcade games.

The other two details leaked on the Amazon website are the release date and the price. The Slim Arcade is due out on August 20, 2010 in Germany. Gamescom, the European equivalent of E3, is scheduled from August 18-22, coincidentally. We'll have to wait and see on when this version of the Xbox 360 will be avalable in the United States but it should generally be around the same time.

They price the new console is listed in Euros at €148.99 which translates to $187 and change. The $199.99 retail price in the United States is unlikely to change for the new Arcade.

Interesting - I kind of figured they would ship with a 16G thumb drive, but I guess the profit margin isn't big enough :).

4GB thumb drives are ~$20 cheaper than 16GB drives.

I am kind of interested. The only thing is, if I do add an HDD, it would void the warranty. That is a bit of a deal breaker. I already have a 250GB HDD and I'm not sure I want to downsize.

Wut? :\
What warranty would be voided?

Wait, adding a HDD voids the warranty? I HIGHLY doubt that...

Link please.

MS hasn't announced them yet but they'll be selling 250GB HDDs eventually. Probably when the new Arcade is launched.

The new 360 Slim comes with a 250GB HDD so I can't imagine MS offering anything smaller.

I was under the impression it was internal. If it is, I can't install one without voiding the warranty, which is my concern.

The hard drive is in a little enclosure that pops out of the case. It's internal but replaceable without voiding the warranty.

Exactly, they built a compartment that it slides into, it's got a trap door covering it.

Well, I'm definitely glad I got my regular 360 Arcade at Target when they were running the $130 + $50 gift card deal. The price difference between the regular 360 Arcade and the Slim is big enough to easily afford a hard drive module. But at least the 4 GB of storage (vs. what, 512 MB in the old arcade?) means extra storage isn't necessarily a required purchase.

I'm guessing even with 4 GB they won't have backwards compatibility?

Yeah, I love my Jasper Arcade unit. When games are installed it's quiet as a mouse.

You haven't heard quiet until you've heard (or not heard) the new 360 S console. I'd pay the $299 for just the quieter operation of the new console. It's pretty dang awesome! And with the new Arcade version coming out, I see no reason to purchase an older version. It's just so much more refined than the previous versions.

Reminds me of that recent episode of Attack Of The Show where they were reviewing it and complained that it didn't have a removable hard drive. A viewer "Tweeted" during the show and corrected them. They then showed how it came out and raised their score. :)

Yet another example of how Attack of the Show fails. They are always under informed, making themselves looks stupid. All the show tries to do is be popular, but it's even failing at that.

What a terrible replacement for The Screen Savers it has turned out to be :(

Probably true, but I often sit VERY close to the console and if there is no sound going on through the speakers then you can barely hear it, if there's any sound at all you cannot hear it at all. For all practical purposes that's as quiet as I need.

the newer 'old model' 360's are pretty freaking quiet. my newest one i bought in april and it had a manufacture date like a week before i purchased it. i was SHOCKED at how quiet it was compared to my older model one that died. it was like night and day. when i was installing ssf4 to the hdd i could BARELY hear the drive spinning even though it was reading at full speed.

i can't hear the 360 at all now when i play ssf4 off the hdd. it is virtually silent.

Maybe I have super hearing, but I can hear the 360 slim from 10 feet away in a quiet room.

I could hear the 360 elite fan from a different room.

My buddy has a Jasper Elite and it sounds like a 747 taking off. My Jasper Arcade is quiet as a mouse though.

Yeah one main reason I got a ps3 slim was b/c every Xbox 360 unit that I heard(varying from launch unit the jasper elite editions) sounded like a jet on a runway. I love how the ps3 is completely silent. The only way to tell it's on is by the lights. I would love to hear the new xbox 360slim in comparison.

Maybe because I've heard actual jet engines on a runway, I just don't see the Xbox's as loud. I sit probably 3ft away from my 46" TV (yeah, I know) and I never heard my launch model. My new arcade I got when I finally got the RRoD in January, is the same. I think I hear my PS3 more than my Xbox360 (mostly because I use my 360 maybe once a month if that).

I don't know why you guys are talking about the sound some have better dvd drives than others.

Nothing to do with the console it's self . The early consoles with the samsung drive and the Hitachi usually were on the loud side. Now this has got much better with all the new jasper units cause they are all lite on drives. I still have heard some louder ones thought. 360-s is still a liteon but they put a pad under the rim to kelp the noise of the louder drives down that's it.

On sound I really don't care I have heard loud ps3's also so lets not do the fan boy ps3 are great hardware argument . End of rant!

Some Jaspers have better fans than others too, it's not just the DVD drives.

Watching netflix or playing HD-installed games I can hear the fans from 6 feet away (Jasper Elite from last September). They're loud enough that I wouldn't want to use the 360 for streaming music or playing CDs.

It has NOTHING to do with the optical drive. When my Elite is powered up with no disc in the drive, it is MUCH louder than my 360 S just idle. When I play an OnDemand 360 games, it is even louder. Again, nothing to do with the optical drive.
