Not a chance I'd buy a recertified Xbox from a vendor like buy.com, which couldn't care less about its customers.

I'd like to know why a non-HDMI model makes one nervous. It's not like the HDMI models are more reliable. That's just a myth some people cling to for whatever reason.

people want hdmi because once the hdmi xboxes came out they had the new hardware that caused less RROD failures.

overstockdealz.com has the same deal on a xbox360 for 199.99 Not sure if the xbox is HDMI. But after my last experience with them I wouldnt buy anything else from overstockdealz.com they ripped me off on a digital camera by not including the carger for the NIMI battery. And they said the RMA # on the camera was invaild and they wouldnt let me return it.:|

That's not true at all. I don't know why people continue to spread that around even though there's nothing to prove it.

Recertified is just a new word for used. I would rather just buy a standard used one (with warranty) unless this comes with the 3yr warranty.

The 360 has had 4 designs (I think). The first ones manufactured had major issues with heat and the overheating caused the solder joints to melt and come loose.... This is where the RROD problems come from. Of course, overheating any electronics can cause component failure that would result in other problems.

Buying a recertified Xbox 360 from anywhere is a risk because you're buying a unit that has less warranty and you cannot guarantee how old the unit is. If you buy one from a friend, at least you can guarantee when He or She bought the thing. The recertified ones could be from 2005, 2006, 2007, or last month. The only thing that might justify it is that if you got stuck having to replace it, you could buy a second refurb and you'd only be out $50 more than if you had bought a brand new one. (and you could sell the refurb for scrap on eBay for around $100-130 if you part it out)

it's better to buy a new xbox anyway. you have the small processing chips and the overall cooler machine. no red ring of death.

You have no idea what you're talking about. There are currently three board revisions for the 360:
1. Original (no HDMI)
2. Zephyr (redesigned board with HDMI, primarily found on early Elites)
3. Falcon (redesigned board with HDMI and 65nm CPU)

There is a _ton_ of evidence to suggest that the Falcon boards are far more reliable than the original and Zephyr boards. Seriously, do some research.

Ditto. One link breaks both your list and the context of your post. And yes, I actually have an Opus 360. Fresh from RRoD repair in early May.

Now whether Buy.com is selling Opus 360s or not really depends if they are refurbished by Microsoft or Just Some Company.

Edit: Looked at the link in the OP more closely. It's not a Microsoft refurb since it has a 60 day Buy.com warranty. A Microsoft respiff would have a 90 day warranty.

And yes Microsoft has offered refurbed 360s at retail before. Haven't seen one for a while though, so it might be something they discontinued.

Except that Opus has only been in use a short time, so buying a recertified 360 is still playing Russian roulette with 3 bullets unless you can confirm in advance that the non-HDMI refurb has an Opus motherboard.

shingletingle is of course completely wrong about any non-HDMI 360 that isn't an Opus refurb.
