I need some serious parallel computing power for a project I am working on. Since both consoles are sold below cost and prob pacts a lot more computing power than what I can get in a PC at the same cost, which one would be better in terms of toolchain support?

My program comes under GCC 4.3.

Wii so you can get nude girls to do the hula hoop game and no one would care about you missing the project.

I ran across an article a few weeks ago where a group had strung together an insane amount of PS3"s for some distributed work. I would go that route for the sake on simplicity in set-up. Do a google search as a lot of the leg work on setting them up has already been done. Its ability to run linux easily just makes it a lot easier than working with the 360.

PS3 is more powerful, but you can get 360s for way cheaper. I got my used Premium on ebay 6 months ago for $150.

you can run Linux on a PS3...and apparently 360 use a PowerPC processor, iirc. So, I'd go with the PS3.

The PS3 and 360 are essentially the same processor wise. They were both made by IBM with the 360's processor being developed off of the PS3's. The difference is that the the 360 has three dual-threaded cores while the PS3 has one core and the 7 SPEs.

I would get the PS3 though simply because it's already made to have linux installed on it with ease whereas the 360 requires some hacking. You don't get access to the GPU though.

Depends on the version. Launch version easily got up to 25-33%. Falcon version probably around 10%. Current Jasper version is unknown but presumably lower.

PS3 for sure. If you want to play games, of course, that's a different story entirely.
