It seems like I read on here somewhere that the xbox 360 normal dvd player can upconvert IF and only IF you use VGA. Is this true? I currently have the monster component cables (I know, monster is a rip, but they honestly do give a less 'grainy' picture on my HP plasma compared to the 'stock' component cables..) but I also have the MS VGA cable, so it wouldn't cost me anything to use that instead..

EDIT:

probably should also be noted that my 42 inch plasma's native res is 1024x768.. so 720p... I think..

I've been using VGA on my 42" LCD and it is fantastic. The VGA is outputting at exactly 1366x768 which is the resolution of the LCD.

Component:
* HD DVD - 1080i resolution maximum, limited by AACS
* DVD - Upscaled to 480p maximum, limited by CSS
* Games - 720p games upscaled to 1080p, also supports native-1080p games in the future

...f'ing MPAA...

Yeah but what makes VGA so special that it's 'allowed' to output a higher res?

I think because it has the capability to send the copyright protection data for auth verification. I might be way off though.

I have the HD-DVD player for the Xbox 360 and I feel that the upconvert through VGA at 1080p looks better than the 720p/1080i component upconvert.

This is through a 42" LCD HDTV 1080p.

Just how the MPAA rules worked out. They forgot to include VGA because VGA inputs were rare on TVs until recently.

Interesting and honestly kind of annoying.
