xbox 360 occasionally freezing...

Then I doubt its the symptoms of a RROD. Are discs clean/near scratch free and is the system in a well ventilated area? My Falcon froze on me once while in the dashboard but I haven't put but around 10 hours of gameplay on it so far.

it's on the floor vertically in a relatively cool room and it's not touching anything else, the games that froze were once with assassin's creed which i've owned for 1 day and once w/ halo 3 which i've had for about 2 weeks as well....the discs are in perfect conidtion as well...

is it normal for 360s to freeze occasionally? I never use it for more than 4-5 hrs at a time.

Well if the floor is carpet thats your first mistake because when vertically it ain't pulling in much air. The main vent is on the bottom. It needs to definitely be horizontal if its carpet floor. Has if ever locked up as soon as you started to game? Or after a hour or two? Because 4-5 hours is a long time if the system can't keep cool.

Carpet or not I would set it horizontally and see if it locks up again. If it does then I would be concerned if it doesn't then that was likely your problem.

The floor can shake or what not with people walking around.

floor is a plain wooden floor....
it has never locked up upon starting, always midgame 2-4 hours in i guess....hard to gauge time...it's happening once every few days so i've yet to be able to discern a pattern....would it help to put it horizontally even on a plain wooden floor?

nycxandy is right

What I would do is put it horizontally on maybe a couple old magazines, books or something because with the floor being hard surfaced if someone walks/stomps near it the system would take more of the shock. But if the system is on something like a mag it shouldn't shake as much. Even a rug wouldn't be a bad idea as long as its horizontal.

Thats if there is no way to put it up higher on a TV stand or something.

i'll give it a shot but i'd like to point out that currently i live by myself and the only action going on is me sitting in my papasan with my foot up...=x
sorry to be such a pain in the ass but i can't think of my conditions for the xbox to be less than really good...i mean 2 week old falcon, new games, clean floor, cool room, and just me in the house.... what really concerns me is if random freezing is to be expected? or is this cause for concern?

Well I wouldn't be concerned until its horizontal and doing it. The system being vertical alone could cause the occasional lockup. I remember back in the day when some of the older original playstations had to be turned upside down before it would read anything. Not all lasers are adjusted the same maybe yours is a tad bit picky while sitting vertical. But if this is the case it doesn't mean you have a bad/defective laser.

But if it continues to freeze in horizontal then I would suggest taking it back or at least calling MS and getting their opinion.

Personally I think since I have owned by xbox 360, since last november, I had maybe 1 freeze (or 0 if I recall) and maybe 4 disk read errors (that a gui popped indicating that mesasge) that were verified the CD had some fingerprints or smudge on it.
Your environment is ideal as long as it's not caused by any shaking or vibration. If possible I would recommend returning it for another especially since your still in the "new" window. May have received a bad/failing unit.
However, I do have my system Horizontal but have played it successfully vertically when traveling.
In short based on my own experience system freezes are not nomal for the xbox.
