xbox 360 multiplayer with original xbox?

One thing I've been searching for (with no success) is any mention of whether it would be possible to play an original xbox game on the 360, in multiplayer against the same game running on an original xbox.

The reason I'm interested is that when I get a 360, I'd love to be able to play networked games against my gf on the original xbox.
In other words, 2 TVs, 2 copies of *insert game*, one xbox and one 360...

Speculation would suggest that if 360 is emulating the xbox correctly, there's no reason why the two machines couldn't connect transparently with the same game.
I wonder then too, whether that would include LAN play rather than just Live.

Any thoughts? Anyone?

I heard that no they won't be compatible because ATI and NVIDIA couldn't come to an agreement, don't quote me on that though. If true really sucks for xbox owners.

Nope, xbox360 will not be backwards compatible with the xbox, therefore there won't be a game that runs on both systems therefore no chance of having them go against each other in xbox live.

So all that talk by MS meant nothing? All the press releases about emulating the original xbox and making the top releases compatible at launch... has this all changed recently?!

No it hasn't. I believe the more expensive 360 will be backwards compatible. As to whether it will network with an older Xbox, I would guess that depends on the NIC cards more than anything, but that is just a guess.

*phew* I thought I was losing it and failing miserably to keep up with developments. Cheers Pr0d1gy :)

Yeah, the more expensive one has the required hard drive (needed for storing profiles for emulation of original xbox games). I'd like to rig up two 'boxes, but seems a bit pricey to buy another when 360's just around the corner.

Ah well, I'll just have to keep my eyes peeled for something official...

I believe he was being sarcastic.

It is confirmed that the Xbox 360 will be backwards compatible with the top-selling Xbox games. You'll need a HD to play them though since they need an emulation profile.

It was just confirmed about a week ago that 360s will be able to play system link with Xbox. Live, I'm not sure..but I'd guess yes.

Nope - that wasn't sarcasm - it was genuine chagrin :)
