Xbox 360 MCE Streaming content

So I finally updated to MP11 because it says I can stream media from my regular XP Pro box to a MCE (in this case, my 360) over the network. Yahoo! No need for stupid Media Center Edition!

Wrong. At least partly.

I load up my library, pointing to my shares where all of my media is stored (Server 2k3 for the time being until I figure out what exactly I did to my Debian machine - a slight mishap with an open bottled water). I have mapped drives of Z (music) Y (videos and movies) and X (pictures). I can view, play, and everything I normally do from that machine with no problems.

So I load up the sharing thing and my Xbox 360 sees the machine and everything is all good to go.

Except that I can only see the local files on the XP Pro machine.... Anything that is in my library that is on a mapped drive simply doesnt show up. I figured it must be the permissions on the 2K3 server. So I borrow a laptop from work, stick a new (non-domained) image on it, use simple file sharing and nada. Same thing.

Has anyone gotten this to work? I sure seem to either have missed something or this is by design for MS.

Any help would be appreciated!

If I'm understand what's going on, have you checked WMP11 settings to make sure you've told it what drives/folders it will share out? It's possible you're just on default settings, which give you your local My Pictures, My Videos, and My Music folders. Other than that, I'm not sure.

Well with WMP11 it really only gives you the option of what kind of media you want to share. I went to monitor folders and added my mapped drives, and under configure settings I set it to share pictures video and music. So my local ones show up (Im using music as my test, so its in My Music) but the media on the mapped drives (on the windows xp box that I am sharing my media from) I added it to monitor dont show up.

what type of files are you trying to play ? WMA, WMV, MP3

Well I have mp3 as my primary test, but in the test folders there are also .jpg, jpeg, gif, .ogg, .avi, .mpeg among others.
