My 360 died on me this morning. Last night while playing GoW and GTA I was getting a bunch of black dots all over the screen. This morning when I went to turn on the console the 4th light on the light ring started flashing red and I got a system error along with error code E 74. Went online to file for a repair and...the warranty ended 6 days ago!!!!

I did some searching and it seems that micro$haft will only repair a 360 outside of the warranty if it has 3 red lights, which is for overheating. Does anyone know if they had a recall for one flashing light? The console is only a year old, its ridiculous that it cant last longer than that.

Well what I just did a few days ago when my roomates did that was do the towel trick and it will fix it for about 5 minutes. Then you will get either the rrod or e74. Call into microsoft request a replacement for the rrod. Then when you get ready to send it off do the towel trick again but this time don't turn it on whatsoever. If you did it right then it should boot up fine. Put a letter in the box saying every once in a while you get the rrod. It mostly boots up fine but sometimes you get the rrod. And they will replace it free.

Wrap the 360 up in a towel to prevent hot air from being exhausted.

heh, nice.

The 360 comes with a 1 year warranty right? I just realized that I bought my 360 in December of last year so it should still be under warranty, microsofts site says the warranty expired on November 8th...except, I dont have my original receipt!

Yep, 1 year warranty. Probably worth calling them back.

And if you do decide to do the towel trick wrap it with like a heater blanket type of blanket (don't turn the heater blanket on) and then with a really thick blanket. Then just sit by and watch for the power supply light to go from orange to green and when it does unwrap it and let it sit for about 15 minutes.

Are you sure you didn't see 3 rings? My one ring once turned into 3 when I was talking to support.

Dammit, that's my joke. :p

The one time I called, they insisted they walk me through their little troubleshooting even though I knew the Xbox was a goner, so I just sat there on the phone, listening to their instructions, telling them it's still broken, all while looking at my 360 sitting in a book bag in front of me.

If it's a RROD, it's 3 years.

I know about the 3 year warranty for RROD, but their website says that it has to have 3 red lights, mine only has one.

Im going to call them tomorrow and see where I can get.

^^ hehe, nice Star Trek reference.

Only problem with the towel trick is I dont think the xbox will get hot enough just sitting there on the "contact customer support" page, its not stressful enough.

Well, the towel trick actually worked. The xbox is on and running fine now. Now what do I have to do to force those 3 red lights?

Well, after doing the towel trick yesterday the xbox has still been running just fine. Played Halo, fable 2, and madden 09 and no red lights. The single red light I was originally getting has not come back and I still havent gotten 3 lights.

in my case i had one red ring and an E71 error, then after a few reboots i then got the RROD.

chances are if you keep using it, it will switch to a RROD.

also, if you bought with a Visa platinum or AMEX or something like that, there's a good chance your warranty is doubled so you should actually be covered.
