Would the hard drive transfer kit work in this sense if I purchased a new xbox 360 elite and wanted to transfer my old hard drive onto that new one. I am unsure because the 2 xbox's have different hardware so I didn't know if that would make a difference.(ex. one xbox has a hdmi and the other does not)

Yes. the hardware of the 360 itself doesn't matter.

you can only go from small to big. or same size to same size.

so you can't transfer 120gigs to a 20gb. regardless of how much actual content you have on the larger drive.

So do I really need to do the hdd transfer or can I just take the hdd from the old xbox and put it into the new one?

I'm actually curious as well. I just got my 120 GB hard drive in the mail today and guess what, I can't use the transfer cable I bought because they gave me a burned copy of the transfer CD instead of the original one. So now I have to either find someone with one who can mail it to me or figure out another way of transferring my stuff across.

Since I have a 256 MB memory card, I'm thinking maybe I can just transfer my saved games and stuff across with that. Sure, it'll take a while, but it's still faster than waiting for a CD to come in the mail. Is this possible? Basically, is the transfer cable just a more convenient way of transferring the data (vs using a memory card, which takes longer and most people don't even have), or does it actually do something else? I'm aware I'll probably have to do the license transfer after this, and that's fine. Only thing I'm wondering about is the actual data transfer.

EDIT: Actually, it looks like I'll be able to transfer my stuff with the memory card. I have my gamertag on the card so I can bring it to friends' houses, and after plugging in my new hard drive, I'm still signed in and able to use everything. So to answer your question, hennessy, you should be able to just plug in the new drive. Only problem is you'll lose all your saved games unless you have a memory card or transfer cable to bring them over. You can at least recover your gamertag.

You can take the old HDD and put it on the new 360. You'll just need to do the license transfer after you get it on there.

But if you are going from an old Pro to an Elite, I would definitely get the transfer kit so that you can use the much larger HDD.

Is a license transfer the same as recovering your gamertag or something completely different?

It's different. Again, if the HDD on your new console is larger than the old HDD, I don't recommend just swapping HDDs. Get the transfer kit. You can only do a license transfer once per year so you'll want to make sure you've got the setup the way you want it.

I know you need the adaptor to transfer files between hard drives, but do you actually need the disk?

Another thing I just ran into as I was trying to move some files to my new memory card (before subsequently transferring them onto the new hard drive): Some games do not let you transfer your saved games to other devices. The ones that prevented me from doing this were Rock Band (both RB2 and Beatles) and Forza Motorsport 2. So I'm going to lose ALL my saved information from those games unless I get a working hard drive transfer CD from somewhere. Don't really care about FM2 since I don't play it anymore and FM3 is coming out soon, but I'd rather not lose my Rock Band 2 data. And I really don't want to have to rent or borrow Rock Band 1 again just to transfer those songs. So I guess I'll just wait for a transfer CD.
