Xbox 360 HDD question (taking apart + using)

So my friend's Xbox 360 Elite died. Oh well..

He's planning on getting a new Slim.
I noticed you can buy Slim Shells.

Q: Can I take apart the old Elite's HDD, stick it in the shell, and then stick it in a Slim? (Is there any flashing/hacking involved?)

New to this... TIA!
