xbox 360 HD DVD drive

I have a very new HDMI xbox 360 premium edition. I think the dvd drive is ALREADY broken. The console is at most two months old!

It is covered by warranty but id prefer to have uninterrupted gaming.

I dont want to send it in to msft and wait forever to get it back and i was debating getting the hd dvd drive anyways....... so the question is:

Can I use the add on drive as a primary drive? To play games, dvds and hd dvds?

Not without doing a hack. The DVD drive is tied to the console.

The OP is just better off exchanging it at the store he bought it from (assuming in-store warranty) or replacing it through MS.
