xbox 360 graphic limitations

With the 360 being out close to what 2 years now? Do you think that developers have tapped into all the graphical resources there are to be had on the big box? Or do you think we will continue to see graphical improvements in games to come. Im pretty sure the ps3 hasnt even begun to show what its made of even with the MGS4 trailers.

And im not talking little baby step ups I mean a big WOW i didnt think the 360 could do that kind of graphic.

i think theyve probably reached the hardware/firmware limits for certain games, but there is always room to improve on the software side.

the ps3 on the other hand its lacking on both counts. we should see it come together next year or two.

Nope it will probably be like the original xbox and be killed by microsoft before it can reach its full potenial.

I think Gears Of War pushed it near its limits. I'd expect some games looking near that and somewhat improved.

I read something the other day that said that GoW wasn't even fully utilizing all of the 360s cores. I can't find it now of course (that's twice this has happened to me today...I need to save links)

Here's what I could find. Interview with Cliffy B.

Having worked on Xbox 360, from a technology standpoint, how much more do you think the system can be pushed with future games?

I think there's plenty of room to push and experiment when it comes to physics and AI and real-time lighting. I think we've only scratched the surface of what we can do with gameplay as well as the 360. There's far more potential down the road to do more stuff. As amazing as I think Gears is, and my gut tells me I still love playing it, I think we have a really incredible experience; I think we'll definitely push it further if we get around to dong a new version in the future.

It wasn't sustainable from a cost perspective for MS. They didn't own the hardware or any of the IPs for it. They had a big pissing match with Nvidia over reducing costs. It just wasn't happening. They weren't going to be able to reduce costs like Sony could with the PS2. So, instead of selling it at a loss for perpetuity they ended production.

MS owns all the hardware and IPs for the 360 so it won't be the same problem for them this generation. A MS rep just yesterday said that they were working on the lifespan of the 360 to be longer than the typical 5 years....like the PS2 and PS1.

GoW was the best looking on the 360 till CoD4 came out IMO. It looks amazing, even if it's not a HUGE leap... but I definitely see improvements. So I'm sure we'll see even more in the near future.

This would have to be your first video game hardware generation to even have a logical excuse for thinking that's a possibility.

There's always some game out there that'll come out and surprise us in terms of what it can do with the hardware. I don't think we've seen that game yet. There's still plenty of potential.

I think that Gears of War used a lot of tricks to make it look like it did, and there's plenty more to coax out of the system. Gears looks fantastic when you first see it, but if you look closely, there isn't really that much going on in the game engine. Of course, I think all "dark" games like GoW are able to be better graphically because they can "hide" stuff.

If Alan Wake would come out anytime soon with the physics and graphics that have been on display, that'd be a nice bump. Personally, I'm quite pleased with the graphics on recent games; maybe I don't have a refined eye for this type of discretion, but I think the graphics on games like Halo 3, PGR4, etc look damn good.

Call me crazy, but that pic of GOW wasn't impressive to me.

It's not supposed to be impressive on its own, but just to show how the PS2 graphics progressed from 2001 to 2006. Big leaps even if the PS2 isn't anything by today's standards.

No, and I don't even own a 360.

As others have mentioned, look at the graphical increase in games on previous consoles. A prime example of this is the graphics of Halo 2 (2004) compared to the original Halo (2001) on the exact same hardware.
