In the past when one system got a price cut they did so all around. I know Sony announced no price cuts but are they really just giving ppl and extra 40gb and just keeping the prices the same?

that's the idea, more money up front and they give you better technology.

it's not really new it's like bundling games instead of dropping the price of the system.

look at psp, it gets new revisions but the price stays the same. It's good that way though, your stuff keeps higher value.

Yes. Sony is swapping the 40GB HDD out with the 80GB HDD and adding in the DS3 controller as standard for $399.99. Since the 80GB was at $499.99 before this is technically a price drop.

Sony is looking for profitability right now and that isn't something they can achieve by selling PS3s at even bigger losses than they are now.

It's also because Sony is offering more services they're trying to get you to buy into. So by offering you a bigger harddrive built in for the same price they're encouraging you to d/l movies and games from their PSN/HOME service.

Nothing in life is free...

Several rumors suggest price cuts on the 360 again in September, and Sony does have 160GB PS3 SKUs for preorder on their website a Price cut of a sort.

There will be a 160GB PS3 with Uncharted for $499
And an 80GB PS3 replacing the current 40GB for $399

They aren't rumors anymore. Radio Shack, K-Mart, and Best Buy ads have been scanned showing the new 360 prices for Sept 7th. $199.99, $299.99, $399.99.

Sony will evaluate how much damage the new 360 pricing does before committing to a price drop. Right now they are outselling the 360 in the US at a $50 - 120 disadvantage. They will probably do some sort of price drop in November if Microsoft's price drop invigorates sales.

Yep.

Also, for those of you saying that "bigger HDD = pseudo price drop", remember that Microsoft is doing both by upping the premium to a 60gb drive. Ultimately, Sony only saw PS3 sales tick upwards by dropping the absolute price of the unit by $100.

You could call the new 80 GB a "price cut," because it is essentially the 40 GB at the same price with more hardware (DS3, bigger hard drive).

You can't call the 160 GB a "price cut," because it's essentially the 40 GB with more hardware and a higher price. It's not the old 80 GB with more hardware and the same price.

I feel bad for the uneducated consumer trying to figure out what to buy this generation. :Q

Also coincided with MGS4 too...that has a trickle down effect for months on console sales.

I also look at it this way. If i need wireless...tack on anohter 100 bucks to the 360...for blu ray capabilities..um....

The hardware for these to systems are completely different. So dropping one in price doesn't mean dropping the other. The 360 might be able to drop prices more because there isn't really anything special being included, imo

Very valid point

The Arcade Xbox 360 ($199 variant) lacks a Hard drive as well. That is an extra $89 for a 20Gb or a $179 for a 120Gb hard drive to be added.

I think the key point being missed is that the market, mostly, doesn't care about extra features. It's all about price, for the most part.

What value is added to the PS3 by adding 40GB of drivespace?

I just got my 80GB recently. I would have bought a 40GB if that SKU had backwards compatiblity.

I've installed 3 PS3 games from disc, 3 demos from PSN, and emulated a memory card for a PS2 game. I still have tons of space left on my hard drive, but I'm nowhere near using even 10GB. I don't anticipate having more than 5-10 games installed at any one time.

I'm not likely to buy or rent movies from PSN because I don't really have the internet speed to support downloading them in a reasonable amount of time.

I think that my preferences are typical for many potential PS3 owners. How many people could really use 80 GB versus 40 GB? And isn't it just cheaper to buy a SATA drive and install it yourself?

I honestly don't think I've come close to filling mine, and I have 10 GB devoted to a Linux installation that barely works. But they want you to download movies and all that. DaveSimmons loves to talk about putting your entire MP3 collection on there, but I think he's the only person who wants to do that. ;) I just stream my media, but then not everyone is like me.

Really, it all depends on how you use it, how many games you have, etc. I think the average user probably wouldn't fill 40 GB. Most of us here aren't average users.

I have a 40Gb and think I've used ~20Gb with 7 games installed including DMC4 and MGS4. Also, if you like game demos, those take up a Gb or two each. In a year or two when I have to start deleting stuff, then I could see the use of a larger HDD. Other people who actually use it as a media center for music and video would find a use. Except these same people would need way more than 80/160Gb.

I don't see the point in the HDD size wars in consoles. I have a 360 Elite with 100GB free and my 60GB PS3 has 30GB free. I guess when the new 360 firmware comes out I can rip all my games to disc which will eat up that space.

I need to wait for the 500 GB laptop drives to drop in price before doing it -- my music server has over 300 GB of lossless FLAC files ripped from my CD collection :)

But yes, streaming is fine for most people. I've just been too lazy to get it working on my PS3.

Oh man, it's really easy with TVersity (assuming TVersity supports FLAC, I have no idea)
