Sony will evaluate how much damage the new 360 pricing does before committing to a price drop. Right now they are outselling the 360 in the US at a $50 - 120 disadvantage. They will probably do some sort of price drop in November if Microsoft's price drop invigorates sales.

Also, for those of you saying that "bigger HDD = pseudo price drop", remember that Microsoft is doing both by upping the premium to a 60gb drive. Ultimately, Sony only saw PS3 sales tick upwards by dropping the absolute price of the unit by $100.

I also look at it this way. If i need wireless...tack on anohter 100 bucks to the 360...for blu ray capabilities..um....
The hardware for these to systems are completely different. So dropping one in price doesn't mean dropping the other. The 360 might be able to drop prices more because there isn't really anything special being included, imo

What value is added to the PS3 by adding 40GB of drivespace?
I just got my 80GB recently. I would have bought a 40GB if that SKU had backwards compatiblity.
I've installed 3 PS3 games from disc, 3 demos from PSN, and emulated a memory card for a PS2 game. I still have tons of space left on my hard drive, but I'm nowhere near using even 10GB. I don't anticipate having more than 5-10 games installed at any one time.
I'm not likely to buy or rent movies from PSN because I don't really have the internet speed to support downloading them in a reasonable amount of time.
I think that my preferences are typical for many potential PS3 owners. How many people could really use 80 GB versus 40 GB? And isn't it just cheaper to buy a SATA drive and install it yourself?

FWIW, some Wal*Marts have dropped their 40G PS3s to $349.99. Picked up one yesterday.

I honestly don't think I've come close to filling mine, and I have 10 GB devoted to a Linux installation that barely works. But they want you to download movies and all that. DaveSimmons loves to talk about putting your entire MP3 collection on there, but I think he's the only person who wants to do that.I just stream my media, but then not everyone is like me. .

But yes, streaming is fine for most people. I've just been too lazy to get it working on my PS3.
