So I got the Xbox 360 Halo 3 bundle and am finding it extremely hard to control my movement unlike the PC where moving around was a breeze and simple. Whats the best way to go about this? How did you guys get past the learning curve. Man I was so charged up when I got Halo 3 but now I'm kinda repenting it. I'm basically a PC gaming guy who just got the Xbox 360 for Halo 3.

It's not nearly as fluid or instinctual as FPS on a mouse/KB. Keep practicing. It will take a good amount of time before you are anywhere near comfortable.

I was a hard core FPS player since the original quake. I'm still not used to playing FPS on a console. It's different. Very different.

Glad i never had that issue.

Yep, practice is the only answer. You don't have to focus on it, though, you'll just get better and better as you become accustomed to the sensitivity.

Just keep practicing, you really will get better. Before I bought Bioshock I think the last console FPS I really played was Goldeneye. I do alright in Halo 3 now.

As others have said, keep practicing. Rent, borrow or buy some more FPS games and keep at it. I'm also a long-time PC FPS player. I finally bought a 360 about 9-10 weeks ago and have gotten used to the controller. Play through Bioshock, Halo3 and the entire Orange Box (HL2, Ep1, Ep2 and Portal) and you should be good to go!

I looked at those when I was considering purchasing a new console. The best thing to do is just play...a lot. Repetition.

it definitely takes some getting use too. it's slower and not as precise. If you are use to whipping out headshots with a mouse, don't expect it to translate well with a controller.

Zeppelin2282,
I have the XCM XFPS 360 Pro and while it does allow you to use a mouse and kb (I use a G5 and a generic kb), it is just not the same. I played through all of Halo 3 with it, and basically, while it allows for fairly precise shooting and movement, it has annoying stutters.

Basically, the problem is that the analog sticks already attempt to compensate for movement by accelerating slightly when you start to press harder on the stick in one direction or another. The same thing happens when you plug in the mouse. You start moving it and if you move it too slow, nothing happens, but then move it fast and it moves much faster then you intended.

There is a LOT of sensitivity adjustment in the device, however, and it is possible to find that sweet spot that makes any FPS playable with it, but I still found that I needed the Logitech G5 to compansate by allowing me to increase/decrease sensitivity on the fly. (PLUS you NEED a WIRED controller to initialize and program the XFPS Pro... so theres an extra cost there if you don't already have one)

On another note, I also bought the FragFX for PS3. I haven't plugged it in yet, but I am expecting the same performance. The thing that should be better about the FragFX though, is that the SplitFish guys are acctually supporting AND updating the firmware for it, so it is a product that should just get better and better. Silly, me though, I bought it before having bought any FPSs for the PS3... so now I am looking for Resistance or something... I hear it works wonders for Warhawk as well.

It took me a while to get used to it. I was shooting at the ceiling and the ground for a couple hours before I got the hang of it.

I am so close to finally being good with the controller, but just not there. Every shot is an inch over the head or to the right. Got to just keep practicing.

I just gave up on FPS on consoles. GOW is basically collecting dust. I played for 20+hours and could not get used to no KB/mouse. I am sticking to the PC for FPS and basically using my 360 for GH2, GH3 and rockband. :)

switch to inverted. i went from PC FPS to console and I have to invert the axis and it became alot easier... just takes time.

Following this thread is interesting. I also play inverted and find it much easier to aim, although I can do fairly well with it on normal as well.

Practice is the only way to get good. I have my roots in PC gaming as well, but it just takes time. Like somebody else said, don't focus on it, but just play the games and it will come naturally.

Also, I agree about the KB/M adapters (XFPS, FragFX, etc.) You will just not get the same experience as a PC FPS. It is jerky, stutters and has deadzone and sensitivity issues. You can adjust it to make it playable, but I had the SmartJoy Frag for the original XBox (same thing) and it was very difficult. I went back to the original controller after a week or so.

The problem lies in how the games are designed. They are not designed to be used with a keyboard and mouse, but with the gamepad's analog thumbsticks instead. They use a different control scheme, so when you plug in one of these keyboard/mouse adapters, the mouse is really just mimicking (sp?) the analog stick movement, which it doesn't do very well.

Also, the price just doesn't seem to justify it. For the $80 + $30 for a wired controller, you are investing over $100 just to attempt to play FPS games as a PC would. For that same $100, you could get a good gaming mouse, mouse pad, new keyboard and still have some change left over for a game.

I finally got my hands on Resistance FOM, and I updated my FragFX, and I am really impressed. I was expecting stuttery movement and non-fluid movement like I find with my XCM FPS Pro, but if you have the settings the way Splitfish reccomends (ie for Resistance, you set the ingame sensitivity to 9, and the FragFX level to 3) then the mouse freelook is exactly like playing on a PC.

I must specify: the MOUSE FREELOOK feels the same. Everything else is different. Moving back and forth (and strafing) is with the stick on the "frag-chuck" as they call it, and the square, circle, triangle and X buttons are on the mouse... which takes getting used to.

But so far, I like it WAY better then using just a regular controller. I can acctually have some precision in shooting things.
