This is what the OP should do, go to a store, buy another Xbox 360, open it up, switch consoles with your dead one and then return the XBOX you just bought.
thank goodness they scan the SN on the machine now. wich prevents idiots from doing this.
though odds are he would get away with it.
They've been scanning the S/N barcodes since day one at BB and CC to my knowledge and overstock.com also does the same thing.
Chances of me getting away with it are slim as I used a credit card on this console so I am directly linked to the serial number. Besides I have never done a swap like that before and do not plan on doing that.
Anyways I called back MS to find out that after 5 hours they still did not update their systems with the fax I sent in. So that rep went ahead and sent in a work order for my Xbox 360. As 50cent said it is indeed absolutely free as they will be sending me a pre-paid UPS label. I pray on the shipping back to me UPS will treat the package with some care... and I wish MS would use FedEx instead of UPS or even DHL. But atleast it is free.
The shipping both ways will be by UPS ground so it is going to take a while on top of the receipt verification and repair time.
The rep reminded me about extended warranty and quoted me ~$40 for 1 yr and $60 for 2 years.
After having the Xbox 360 lock up more than 10 times now (I had to turn it back on for the MS rep diagnose procdure/documentation), I am guessing it is overheating. There is no ring of death and the power brick is green. The reason why I say it is overheating is that it takes about 3-5 minutes for it to lock up after letting it cool off for a long period. But it takes it anywhere from 15 seconds -1 minute for it to lock up after turning it back on from a lock up.
It also lasts a bit longer (maybe a few seconds - 2 mins longer) with the intercooler.
