A core doesn't have much. Since, this unit doesn't come with a hard drive, I wouldn't call this a very good deal, but what do I know.

You can get pro refurbs from the Internet and your local Gamestop for around $260-270.

If you were to buy a 20GB hard drive for the core and a cordless controller, you'd be out at least $80-100. To get a headset, that's another $20. You might as well spend that up front and get either a pro-refurb.

Ty all it's really for my 8 (going on 38) year old son, If i walked in the house with the wrong thing I would never hear the end of it.

pony up and get a pro refurbed. On the other hand, I don't know if you want an 8 year old on xbox live. A lot of people cuss and make sexual references, so not having a headset and making it a more casual gaming machine might be ideal at that age.
Do some research on what you can't do without a hard drive.
Your call.

Gamestop has those units for $199 online.

All of the gamestops in my area are around $270 with no hard drive and 1 wireless controller. They are usd systems too, not refurbs. (I was told there is a difference by multiple stores)

I did not care about the wireless controller, I don't care about talking on xbox live, as I bought it for my kids mainly for Rock Band. A refurb 20Gb HD costs $60 as well if you are interested in that.

Best price I have seen for them.

Picked up a refurbed pro (w/ wired controller and minus the 20GB HD) from gamestop for $199 for a relative for Christmas and another family member picked up the refurbed 20GB for $59.99 for that same person. Have it burning in for the last 2 weeks with no issue and also made sure it wasn't black listed from Live (my main concern outside of working).
You have 30 days from Gamestop in case it breaks and verified through MS that the 3 year RROD protection is applicable towards purchasing a refurb. You can also add the warranty directly from microsoft for an additional 29.95$ (If I heard him correctly) to the unit so your fully covered in case of a DVD rom or other failure were to occur. I must warn I have not had to use the warranty so unsure how it will turn out when you have "Gamestop Refurbished" stickers on the very back on the unit so your YMMV.
Honestly I wouldn't recommend picking up a refurbed unit unless you can return it locally. It would suck to get a DOA, but even worse to have to pay for return shipping and wait for the credit back.
I would also highly doubt you would get a HDMI refurbed unit from any reseller. Those are fairly recent additions to the Pro family so if this is a requirement you would be better off buying new.
