vertical v horizontal, does it make a difference? (edit: if horizontal, I figured I'd put something under the 4 corners to elevate it a bit and give it some extra vent space on the bottom)

also, do you have to be overly concerned when doing things on the 360 not involving gaming? (ie: watching dvds, netflix instant, etc)

I prefer horizontal because I'm worried about one of my kids tipping the 360 over. Most of the hot air is pushed out the back of the 360 anyways.

Gaming is the most intense thing you can do on the 360. DVDs, Netflix, etc barely push it.

I prefer mine horizontal as well. I started it in the vertical position, but after popping a disc in and hearing it shift, I was worried that it may scratch them over time.

I think either is ok, just preference.

Horizontal. While most of the air is released from the back, there are vents on the top and bottom if the unit is vertical some of the vents get blocked.

I've had my launch 360 in the vertical position for the three and a half years I've had it, and have had no issues with it.

A lot of people claim that the cooling is worse, and that you will get scratched disks and disk read errors in vertical.

I've actually read the heat builds up under the dvd drive (if you've disassembled one, you can see how there is a pocket under there) which causes problems in the horizontal position, but not in the vertical one.

Anyways I have mine vertical, no problems with discs or anything, in fact they're all pristine, I use NXE install feature for most of my games tho.

I put mine horizontal for 2 reasons:

- I want the disc tray to be horizontal

- Horrible illustration of horizontal airflow, If the system is vertical the large vent at the bottom is essentially smothered leaving only the top and the tiny holes on the side of the console. Plus if vertical the GPU would be above the CPU and heat rises. That's just me though.

I had my 360 oriented vertically to begin with and after a month or two started to hear squeaking noises when game discs would spin up. I switched it to the horizontal position and never heard them again.

Have mine vertical but on a mesh shelf. But I typically run games from the hard drive anyway. No issues, but mine is the model released right before Jasper.
