XBOX 360 broke, MS won't fix unless I pay $150

About a week ago my 360 stopped reading any kind of disc I put in. I tried every single game I have, DVDs, etc., no matter what it says "the disc is unplayable". Found a few people online who had the same problem, and from what it sounded something happened to the laser in the DVD drive. I have a launch console (bought November 2005), so I called Microsoft to see what they said. I assumed I would be covered because of the warranty extension, but after being on the phone for almost an hour with a very rude person, she told me it has been out of warranty for 3 months, and I'd have to pay not only to have it fixed, but also for shipping both ways. I asked to speak to her even more rude supervisor, who told me basically "tough luck, send it to us and we'll fix it for $150". I told him I could go buy a new one for $300, to which he said "then I suggest you do that" and hung up on me.

Needless to say, I am furious. I've never had a problem with my system until now. I do not want to buy a new system, but I also don't want to pay them $150 to fix it and in all likelihood get a used system back. So, I'm thinking of buying a new core system with some kind of extended warranty, but that goes against most of my better judgement. Has anyone bought a store service contract for a 360? If so, where did you get it from, and which one(s) is/are the best?

Update: I just went grocery shopping at Mejier and they had a coupon for 20% off any single general merchandise item (electronics included). I decided to get a 360 with this coupon (was going to get a core), but the person told me if I opened a Meijer credit card I could get an additional 10% off, and then if I used it on the 360 I could get ANOTHER 15% off on top of everything. So, I ended up paying $254 out the door for a premium system.

Well I bought my Premium system from Best Buy and bought their extended warranty to cover it. I haven't had to use it and hopefully I won't ever have to but I figured that it would be a good idea to get it. I find it a bit odd that they won't cover your launch system since it's only 3 months outside of the original warranty. Perhaps you should try calling them one more time?

Should've bought it at Costco :)

Returned my 8 month old 360 yesterday due to ring of death. I think Microsoft announced they will fix those for free but I find it much more easier and convenient to take it back to Costco and buy a new one there.

If there were Costcos anywhere near me, I would have. I did buy this one from Sam's...I wonder if they have anything similar.

Outside the warranty is outside the warranty. Doesn't matter if it's 3 months or 3 days, doubly so if there is no on-the-books extended coverage notification for it. I do consumer level tech support for a major computer company, and if you're not covered there is nothing we can do but charge you. I've had people call with systems 2 days OOW, and there was nothing I could do but charge for repairs. There's no playing nice with the front line agents, either, to get us to "bend the rules" as the order system is designed to prevent that. Now, you can try taking it up to corporate customer service and MAYBE if you beg and plead enough to a considerate rep they'll let it through, but 99.9% chance they'll tell you "Your warranty has expired. That means all obligation on our part to fix it at no cost has ended. Pay us or replace it yourself."

As an alternative, you could try calling around to various computer shops around town. There are several where I live that advertise that they fix PS2, XBox, 360s, etc. They might be able to get you a better price on the repair and you wouldn't be out shipping costs.

How do they go about letting you keep your old HD? Do you open the new one first, take that HD, and put the new HD on your old one to be returned?

Didn't have anything saved in my HD, so I just formatted it and returned it with the HD.

Sell it to me for $100. I just want to use it as a media extender anyway I don't need a dvd drive.
