Xbox 360 250GB hard drive pops up on GameStop

Hey remember when the Xbox 360 launched with a 20GB hard drive and you could buy it separately for $100? Yeah, good times, good times. We've now been through 60GB and 120GB hard drives for various price ranges up to $150. Now a 250 GB hard drive has appeared on GameStop.com for $129.99 with a March 23rd release date.

The 250GB hard drives have previously only been used for Special Edition bundles like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and the upcoming Final Fantasy XIII and Splinter Cell: Conviction bundles. While it is good to see the dollar to GB ratio getting better it is still over-priced compared to similar sized hard drives that can be found for around half the price.

A 250GB hard drive sold separately has been rumored for a while but Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg played coy in an interview with Joystiq where he said, "We're always evaluating but for now we feel like the 120 is serving us very well as the standard offering, and then having the 250 as a limited edition is a good balance."

Of course, we are talking about Gamestop here, so they're probably just anticipating people trading in the drives from the limited edition console after they're done playing FF XIII.

Lucky.

I don't buy full games either but I have to keep a close eye on my little old 20GB to make sure to keep some space free.

Having a 20GB started to get pretty rough for me. Now I have a 250GB and being able to install all of the games I'm currently playing is a huge plus.

That would be very nice. I did manage for awhile to at least have one game installed at a time. Forza 3 takes around 2.5GB without even installing it or getting any of the paid DLC.

I keep hoping that since MS is going for so much download content that they will put at a resonable priced HD to attempt to get more online sales.

So now you can get an Arcade + 250GB for $30 more than a 120GB Elite?

Interesting...

They're probably going to announce the replacement of the 120GB with 250GB at E3!

i may return my used 120gb(within week period) to gamestop and pick this up...for a small price more get double the size.

I just bought a 250GB laptop bare drive and swapped it with my 20GB launch drive. Easy as cake. I know MS recently announced the 250GB would not be for retail, but they may have changed their minds.

When they announced the 250GB drives for Japan, it was a matter of when not if for North America.

I was at the local Fry's here yesterday, and just happen to browse the 360 aisle. They still have a boat load of 20GB and 60GB drives, but no 120GB drives.

I may end up getting one of these 250GB drives to replace a 20GB drive I have on my original 360 "Pro".

Now available on Amazon for $129.99 with a March 28th in-stock date. Apparently it should be available today, as GameStop originally indicated, according to MS (via Joystiq).

This is really really good news for me. I haven't been on the Xbox much since before Christmas as I ran out of room and don't have much to delete at this time. I posted awhile back about the shortage of the 120GB drive and glad I didn't get one.
