Xbox 360 250GB Drive

Is there a reliable place to buy these drives? I am not talking about the modded ones the actual ones that are in the xbox casing? I see them on amazon and ebay but am unsure which source to go with.

I purchased a black one from here.
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.30827
It turned out to be a brand new 250gb Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 limited edition drive.

It even arrived in its original Microsoft COD MW2 limited edition box.
It looks like a pull from the COD MW2 limited edition xbox 360 bundle.
My guess is when you open the LE COD MW2 xbox 360 box the hard drive is inside packaged in its own box and thats what was sent to me.

Now whether or not thats what everyone gets when they order a drive from there, im not sure since one review states
"Cons: - Packing didnt contain any information, if would be real MS product there should be something? Not really a problem."
Which obviously was not the case with my purchase, mine is 100% real and has been on Live and has worked flawlessly since i received it.

One other thought from me:
Maybe they are drives from returned systems and whoever returned mine returned it with all packaging intact an like new.
And other returns may not be returned with all packaging , which would explain why some may get just a bare drive in generic packaging.

I doubt it was that. Most likely, the manufacturer decided to make a few extra bucks by selling the drive separately to grey-market buyers. That is why it's from this website. This happens a lot with Chinese manufacturers. Of course, I could be wrong.

The 250GB HDD comes attached to the 360 in the MW2 bundle. It is not packaged separately. Also, the box pictured on dealextreme looks pretty bogus. The hard drive could be legit but who knows?

i would guess a real MS drive wouldn't say 'hard drive support hard drive game' on the box.

Mine didnt come in that generic box pictured on the site.
My hard drive came in a COD MW2 Limited Edition Box , it looks just like the limited edition box for the console only its hard drive sized.
Since i dont see them selling seperate online, i assumed it was from the LE console.
But as i said, i dont know.

Yeah I don't think that drive came from Microsoft.
1. I don't think Microsoft would use that font for the words "Hard Drive."
2. "Support HARD DRIVE GAME" == Engrish

If it works, that's great. It's possible that your console could be banned by MS in the future.

Yea after the recent banning, I would be very careful with buying non-Microsoft HDs. $71 for a 250GB xbox 360 HD is too good to be true.

After reading peoples observations i would have to agree its not a Genuine Microsoft drive, since looking at the box there is no Microsoft logo anywhwere and the fonts and wording are a bit odd.
Which is fine with me since it saved me $$$ and i dont really use that 360 on Live due to its firmware. 😉 (just to grab the updates on silver)
And i can update it via download update/create cd later if bans /corruption start happening.

So now that that is settled, hopefully someone can answer the OP's question of: where is a good place to buy?

Well thank you for all your input. As I game on xbox live I am not going to risk it. Once again I appreciate your responses.

Most likely Live won't get banned if you use a 3rd party HDD. Now, MS could conceivably ban the hard drive as an unauthorized 3rd party accessory (much like the Nyko memory card bans). However, I doubt they'd do either because a lot of these drives are sold as legit Online, and they'd have a couple of million parents calling their support lines wondering why their kid's XBox can't connect to an Online system they paid good money for. There's plenty of potential for anti-trust and class action litigation too if they ever banned all hacked hard drives.

Here's a potential money maker for Microsoft...how about making a legit 250GB HDD available for say $125 and reduce the price of the 120GB upgrade to something a bit more realistic?

All that said, I did buy a 250GB WD Scorpio Blue from Newegg.com for $45, a case from DealExtreme for $12, and I flashed it to install on my 360 because the DVD drive noise is just plain obnoxious and I wanted all my games installed and ready to play on a single drive. If MS had made a legitimate option available for even twice the price I paid for my solution, I would've bought it to ensure I would never have an issue with Live.

Must not have heard... MS has been banning consoles left and right for HDD modding lately. So yes, most likely if they ban anything they'll ban his console.

Oh believe me, that was definitely a concern. Most of what I read Online was people getting banned for modifying their optical drive firmware along with the HDD mod. I hadn't found a single case of someone getting banned for a HDD mod by itself. I will certainly let everyone know if I get banned for having a modded HDD, because that's the only mod I've got on my 360.

Can you link to that? Nothing I have heard is the 3rd party HD users getting banned, but more them modders for using non-legit games, etc.

I agree with this. My hard drive has been modded for over a year now, and it still works All of my games are legit, but after my 20GB drive went to crap, there was no way I was giving them what they wanted for a new drive.

People weren't ban for modding hdd, they were banned for madding their dvd drive firmware which allow them to play backup. Although on hindsight, people who can mod their dvd drive probably is tech savvy enough to mod their hard drive.

There is next to zero chance of them banning the console and live account but I considered a chance that they will ban the hard drive. I modded my own hdd a week ago thank to the 45 dollar for 250 gig drive. If they really ban my drive, I will just pop my old drive back in and use my undo.bin to restore the 250gig drive to orignal state and I can use it as a normal laptop hard drive.

Got a link to instructions for this?

And don't you still have to put the disc in to play games that are installed to HDD?
