Xbox 360 & 2005fpw questions for desktop gaming

I think I'm going to sell my GameCube and pick up a 360. I don't know beans about Xbox though. I have a Dell 2005fpw 20" widescreen monitor that I'd like to hook it up to, and I know I want a wireless controller. Beyond that I need some help. I'm currently using my computer off the DVI port, so that nixes DVI. I saw a VGA cable for the 360 which looks like it would work. How would I hook up my headphones? Any top game recommendations? And any games that are fairly kid-friendly?

Wrong forum?

Afaik, there aren't that many kid friendly Xbox 360 games. Afaik, I don't know how you can hook up your headphones either, without using an adapter or an outside reciever/amp.

I have my 360 running on my 2005FPW using the VGA cable while my PC is running DVI. Works great. For the audio, you just need an RCA (red and white) cable to stereo cable adapter from Radio Shack. Shouldn't cost more than a couple bucks.

Great! Does the 360 have built-in volume control in the software? And what resolution do you have it set for your 2005?

Perhaps not the retail games, but pretty much all of the 23 arcade games are kid friendly.

OP, Kameo is on sale for $20 at Sears this week and CC next week if you want a good game for the younger crowd.

Honestly I would just hook the 360 into your computer's soundcard. My monitor has component input so I'll just hook my 360 into that FTW. IMO that is best.

No volume control. I have it connected to external speakers that have a volume knob. I also run 1280x720 for 720P HD on the monitor.

MS makes a VGA cable for hook up to monitors but its VGA, not DVI
i would recommend you spend a lil more cash or wait for 2407FPW to come down to 600 range. that one has component input as well

Just thought I'd add that the Viva Pinata game is coming out later this year (last I heard). I haven't read anything on it, but I've heard it's sort of like Animal Crossing for the 360.

I could be completely wrong, though.

EDIT: Release is October 2nd, 2006.

Well not just kid friendly but things I can play with my wife. She likes games like Mario Kart racing and whatnot.

Hey, how is the 360 through the 2407's components in your opinion? I was going to upgrade my 2405 to a 2407 in order to get component but hear that its actually not that good?

Oh yeah can you hookup a mouse for FPS games?

No. Keyboard can be hooked up for text entry though.

Nuts. I've been playing Ghost Recon at my friend's place and I stink with the joystick on the controller. Too much CS back in the day with a mouse I guess 🙁

You'll get used to it eventually.

Xbox Live Arcade is crack for females.

So what's the deal with Xbox Live? Is it a monthly fee-based kind of thing?

If you want to play against others on Xbox Live - $50/year

If you want to just download demos, Xbox Live Arcade Games, and check leaderboards - free

The $50 is really worth it though.

Nice! Is the wireless adapter good? It's pretty pricey but I'd rather not run cables...

I tried a Linksys Gaming adaptor and it was crap so I returned it and got the Xbox wireless adaptor. The Xbox Wireless Adaptor is very good. The next best solution would be to setup a wireless bridge between two Linksys Routers.

Is a memory card required or can it save stuff to the hard drive?

You'll definitely want the hard drive.

Memory card = 64meg for ~$40
Hard Drive = 20GB for $100

Check the Hot Deals forum because Xbox 360 Premiums (comes with Hard Drive) have been going for ~$350 and less at Outpost.com.

To add, remember that even though you have access to the Live Arcade titles even without a paid Live account, the Arcade titles themselves still cost money to buy. They range from $5 to $10, with one (pool) being $15. They sell them by assigning a price in Microsoft Points, which you purchase from Microsoft. Just the Xbox currency. About 400 points equals $5.

The way Queasy posted it, it could have been translated that the arcade titles were free, so I just wanted to make sure you had your facts straight.

In addition to this, be warned that downloading multiple Live Arcade titles, will require more than the single memory card. It's a requirement for any and all Arcade titles to be able to fit on a single 64MB memory card, but that's only good if you only want one game 🙂.

I have the Microsoft branded wireless adapter ($99), and it works perfectly fine. I did have everything hooked up with wires, but I moved my living room around, and didn't want to run even more wire, so I just bought the adapter. It takes a couple of extra seconds to connect to Live once you turn the system on, but other than that, no difference than be corded.
