I keep reading everywhere about how much better xbmc is than wmce. Is it really all that? I'm really happy with wmce but every once in a while I have .mkv and .ts files that I want to watch but can't because wmce doesn't play it (i don't want to transcode it).

would it play easily on xbmc? is xbmc easy to install?

You need an original Xbox to use xbmc.

It is relatively easy to install if you do a softmod. And yes, xbmc would play .mkv files. .TS files are HD and xbmc doesn't do HD if I remember correctly.

The newest versions of XBMC can play 720p if I remember correctly. It's more of a hardware limitation though, not software.

Most .mkv files I've seen are x264 HD, and those definitely WON'T play on XBMC.

The only 720p that will play on XBMC are xvid files encoded in a specific way is to be playable.

The closest you will regularly get to HD on XBMC is HRHD rips.

I would say generally that XBMC is great for everything up to 720p. Past that a computer is the way to go.

I use my XBMC as a DVD jukebox and for emulators.
