So, I've been working on this setup for the last 2 weeks.
I've got XBMC installed on Mint 12 'lisa'.
So, the problem I'm having is that when I start XBMC it logs me out of my session. I then have a XBMC desktop I can choose as a desktop environment from the login screen. When I log into this desktop XBMC is running full screen, if I put it in windowed mode there is nothing behind it, just a black screen, that does not react to any commands.

So, is there any way to run XBMC while still in my session? Am I doing something wrong?

I'm still rather new to Linux, so if I'm saying something stupid please educate me!

XBMC is a desktop session so to speak. You can use Xephyr to have a nested X window.

Okay, quick question then. If it is a desktop session, does my other programs, for example SABnzbd+ still run in the background?

If it is started by the init system, yes. If it is started by the session then you have to tell the XBMC session to start it.
