XBMC can do a lot more than a PS3 can when it comes to a media player.

As for the OP, I'd still MUCH rather get a simple ION based machine and run XBMC Live on it. Buying an Apple TV II just for this doesn't seem to make much sense.

Shrug, it more than meets my needs.

A promising step, but it doesn't sound like it's really ready for primetime yet. It would be cool if someone could manage to remove all the apple crap and just make it a straight XBMC device.

Awesome, love my XBMC set up, love my iPad/iPhone, can't wait to put them together later.

Agreed.
For $99, and a PURE XBMC device, I'd jump on it for the bedroom etc.
But this appears to be a handicapped version of XBMC running within the Apple environment. With a shitty remote too.
I'm still waiting for XBMC to run natively on the Boxee hardware.

The BIGGEST news in XBMC land is that they are working directly with Sigma now.... giggity!

XBMC isn't really 'handicapped' on the ATV, they just need to fix skins and 1080p (there's occasional choppiness). They said they're working on it on the xbmc forums.

The remote is handicapped for sure though.

Yeah I'm doing more reading on it now.
Actually for $99 I may just bite for a bedroom machine.
The remote blows though. That'll kill me.

Does the Apple TV allow for 3rd party remotes? Or even a USB KB/Mouse? I enjoy my Rii Remote for my main XBMC install

I am still trying to get it to work right on my HTPC....

For some reason it does not like to look in subdirectories for your movie lists... PITA trying to assign each.....

I am, however, impressed that a program (essentially a hax for an OLD platform) still has traction.

I am wondeing when a bigger company will buy them out and crap all over it.

Added to first post. :)

In closing, I so very love my XBMC. I've been using it since the early, pre "XBMC" days on the XBox1. its one of those pieces of software that has simply ingrained itself into my life now.

If I'm understanding you correctly, I assume you mean in Library Mode?
If so, when setting up your directory/scraper choose "Search recursively"

I still use my xbox1. No 720p is annoying, but otherwise I have it all tweaked just the way I like it, so I keep using it.

I have one running too :) Set up on the SDTV that the kids watch a lot.
Works so perfect. In fact I still have an extra Xbox1 in the basement that I should softmod (though I totally forgot how)

I love the apple remote, it works and it's got the essential buttons on it, all my XBMC machines use it...

please excuse my ignorance. why is xbmc better than say airvideo or vlc? it plays media from a server on my device? is it a combination of the two meaning that it doesn't need to transcode and it can push over wifi?
