XB360 GPU vs. PS3 GPU: FIGHT!

We know the specs of the XB360's GPU.

Here is what we know about the PS3:

Sony also unveiled the PS3's graphics chip, the RSX "Reality Synthesizer based on Nvidia technology. The GPU will be capable of 128bit pixel precision, 1080p resolution, some of the highest HD resolution around. The RSX also has 512mb of graphics render memory and is capable of 100 billion shader operations and 51 billion dot products per second. It also has over 300 million transistors, larger than any processor available commercially today. It will be manufactured using the 90nm process with 8 layers of metal. The RSX is more powerful than two GeForce 6800 Ultra video cards, which would cost roughly $1000 total if bought today.

Who wins: ATI or NVDA?

meh, it's all about the games.

To me PS3 wins round one just based on full PS2 & PS1 compatibility vs. XB360 "some" compatibility (which means what, just Halo?)

I still have several Final Fantasy games in my "to be played" pile, and I'll feel better about picking up new PS1 - PS2 games knowing I can keep playing them for as many years as I want to. If I need a Katamari Damacy fix in 2010 my PS3 will let me play it.

When I was deciding between a PS2 and Xbox, there were some Xbox-only games that looked fun (like Panzer Dragoon Orta and the first Buffy game), but not enough compared to the huge number of good PS1 & 2 games.

Now when considering whether or not to buy an Xbox360, I won't be able to factor in many Xbox1 games when figuring the value of the console, so I'll probably wait a year or longer for more 360 games to come out.

On the bright side, hardware bugs will be squashed by then, the first wave or two of games will be priced down to $20, and the console price will be at least $100 less 🙂

PS3 hands down... Im getting one just to use it for SETI (lmao)....Im sure that by that time, someboy will have some code made that will be out their that can use the full power of the cell....

2 TFLOPS!

Cell, meh, not looking all that impressive to me.

same. ill believe sony's hype when it has a product. remember how they hyped up the ps2 just to dissapoint us all?

sony has a track record of releasing overhyped, so thus not up to expectations products and horrible mistakes.

I would say that the PS3 has a faster cpu setup, but the Xbox360 has a better GPU from the current(which they claim to be final) spec sheets.

man, i'm disappointed with design the ps3 looks like a barbeque grill and the controllers man looks like batman throwing things... and of course ps3 beat xbox with the spec YES!!! hahaha

Xbox 360 could be released right now and dominate PS3 when it comes out next year imo.

Being the console developer you are, we are impressed with your uninformed opinion.

We wont be able to answer that until we have the final hardware in our hands.
If you believe Sony the Cell is the second coming. But on the other hand The XBOX 360 GPU is actually based on ATI's R600, leap frogging the next gen chip altogether. While the PS3 will be based on the G70, nVidias upcoming GPU.

The Xbox 360 GPU is R500.

it's R500, but the features it has (unified shader etc) won't be in the R520 desktop chip. They should be in the R6xx line though.

Also I think this christmas is critical for xbox360. If MS can sell enough of them, the PS3 will have a hard time recovering (just like the xbox did against the PS2.) Both systems have incredible specs though.
