x86_64 or i386 release?

I asked a question about this regarding Fedora Core, but now I'm looking at Ubuntu, CentOS and Scientific-Linux.

I read that there are support and compatibility problems with the Fedora x86_64 release, is this the case for all the distributions?

Is their any performance benefit with going with x86_64 releases?

Linux is Linux. Without knowing what kinds of support and compatibility problems you heard about, knowing whether they affect other distros might be a bit difficult. 😉

If your new to Linux it's generally easier to go with just 32bit version. Unless your using certain applications or need the large amount of RAM then moving to 64bit doesn't have serious benifits at this time.

Ok then, I'll play it safe and go for the i386 version.

I have another question: I can't seem to find a DVD iso for the latest Scientific Linux release, I was wondering if I could hack one together by merging the 4 CD iso install somehow. Is this possible? Does Nero or some other program have the relevant tools to do this?

Not realy.

The only way that you'd be able to do is to build your DVD-based installer and all that out of the information on the iso images. It would be difficult and not realy worth it.
