Looking for an 8-10" x86 tablet. Doesn't need to be super powerful as it will be mostly used for email, and spreadsheet type stuff.

Honestly the main use would be for spreadsheets so compatibility with excel spreadsheet macros (or something close) would be nice.

One tablet I'm looking at in particular is the Acer Iconia 8w

In regards to this, is it possible to load other non Windows OSes on this tablet? If so how much trouble does one have to go through? Is it like rooting/jailbreaking or something simple and straightforward?

In all likelihood I'd probably put Windows 10 on it, but I would like to try some Linux tablet distros to see what they have to offer.

The biggest problem with linux on tablets is testing. The less common hardware is the less developed the drivers will be. You don't have very many linux users loading their OS on windows tablets, mainly because linux and its apps are not designed for it (remember how successful windows 7 tablets were?).

Also it is harder to un-fark a tablet when things go south.
