x86 apps on 64 bit windows machine

I'm in the process of changing over from my trusty old PIII 1.0 Mhz. system to a new AMD 64 bit system. I haven't made the full leap yet since I have to apps that wont work on the new machine. I get an error message saying the program is valid but for different hardware. The 2 apps I really need are somewhat obscure, Papermaster -- filing system I have hundreds of items scanned and stored with it. The second is an X10 program called Fuse timer it controls all my X10 stuff throughout the house. Papermaster wont talk to me because I wont buy their latest version for $200, Fuse has existed as is for almost a decade, again I could buy new software butat $$.

I really need both of them to work. What are the odds they would work if I installed regular XP rather than the 64 bit version? From what i read I might loose a little system speed- true?

System: DFI Lanparty UT nF3 250Gb , Amd Athlon 64 3000+, Nvidea GForce 6200 ( not the latest and greatest but a damn good system for under $120 complete)
 
Going to 32 bit XP won't be much of a performance loss, I'd give it a shot, especially if you know your software will work on it. Honestly, the only really good reason to use a 64 bit version of Windows right now is if you have more than 4GB of RAM.
