Hey I'm in the process of upgrading my system from an:

A64 3200+ s754 (OC @ 2.65GHz)
DFI Lanparty nForce3
Radeon X800 Pro - (Now using a 9800 Pro)

to an

Intel e6400
Gigabyte 965P-DS3

I'm not a huge gamer anymore and with my busy schedule I hardly have the time. I tend to just use the computer to surf the web, watch movies, and occassionally game. I made a vow that I wouldn't buy any more new games until I've played the old ones I've bought. I'm also a guy who likes his best bang for his buck, so I tend to buy old school games for less than $20 with a few exceptions. So to give you an idea, the last game I completed was Fallout 1 + 2 (bought them when they were onsale at GoGamer) and the last game I bought was Civ 4.

Anyway, I won't be buying any new games until I finish my old ones, so here is what I have to sift through (not in any particular order):

Planescape: Torment
Diablo II + Expansion
IceWind Dale II
Freedom Force
CC Generals + Expansion
Medal of Honor + Expansion
Doom III
Half Life
Rome: Total War
Civ 4
KOTOR

Well, as you can see, I'm not a heavy gamer. I don't really like FPS anymore and mainly play strategy and RPGs. My old setup played all my games just fine, though in Civ4 the screen would lag if you scrolled too fast when using my 9800 Pro, though ran fine with x800pro. I don't plan to buy any new games except Fallout 3, which is said to run on the Oblivion engine and probably won't come out till next year, if at all. And if I do buy any other games, they will be budget games like KOTORII or other RPGs. I also don't game outside of 1024x768 resolution.

Since I can't use AGP with my new system, I need a new video card. I don't plan to do crossfire/sli and want the best bang for the buck card in PCI-express. I saw that in September there was a deal for the X850XT for $120 or $100AR. If I had been shopping for parts then, I would have bought it. Anyway, I don't want to buy a high-end card unless I have a need for it, so I have restricted mybudget to sub-$200. For under $200 there are the following:

X800GTO for $90
X850XT for $120
X850XTPE for $140
7600GT - $130 or $105AR
7900GS - $185 or $165AR
1950PRO - $200

Obviously, the best overall card is the 1950PRO and I'm tempted to buy it. But, an x800GTO would probably have played all my games fine (though I'm not sure about R:TW). But since my last card was an x800 Pro, I felt like I should at least upgrade my speed. However, last night I did an eBay bid for a new X850XTPE for $100 w/ $16 shipping. I put in a reserve of $115 so I would not go over $131. But anyway, my dad saw that I was outbidded and without consulting me, he upped the bid so that I wont it at $140 total, but I feel that perhaps I should have spent more money to go for either the 7900GS or the 1950PRO or perhaps I should have pocketed the money and gone with an X800GTO.

In the end, I spent $50 more than I probably needed to and for $50 more on top of that, i could have gotten a better card. I know that I get what I pay for, but on the other hand I don't want to buy something that I don't need.

My question to you is whether I should re-ebay my x850XTPE to recoup my costs and upgrade or downgrade tothe X800GTO or if you have any other suggestions let me know.

all nice cards at good prices.. but if you wanna go under $100, 7600gt AR for $105 is probably the best/ most balanced choice.

x850xt is faster but it lacks SM3.0 as well as HD support..

best thing is wait until tomrrow , g80 will be out, price will drop . :)

I believe the extra money for the 7900GS or the X1950 would have been a great upgrade over the 140$ X850. However the 7600GT for 100$ would be a nice upgrade if you were tight on cash.
Since you have the X850XT coming you are kind of stuck unless you can resell for your cost. If it were me I would stick with what you already bought and upgrade when you need to (possibly the next round of mid level cards).

I thought about the 7600GT but I read somewhere that the cards performance w/ SM3.0 was so low that I would be better off buying a better card to reap the benefits. Is that true?

SM3 effects use high detail/complexity shaders, so you want a fast gpu to take best advantage of those effects and maintain smooth framerates.

How much ram do you have 1gb, 2gb? If you dont have at least 1gb of ram just upgrade to 1gb and be done with it.

If you have 1gb then with current ramprices i wouldnt try to goto 2gb.

If the games you listed are absolutely the only games you will play then keep the x850xt.

You should see if you dad can give you the 20 bucks he volunteered to spend of your money lol.

I plan to upgrade to 2GB. Though I'm doing some homework to confirm compatibility and potential overclocking.

I may only have 1GB in the system initially until Vista Comes out. Keep in mind, I'm not upgrading just 1 PC. I have to replace 1/2 the systems in my house and office. So I'm shifting my current A64 systems from my house to the office and replacing them with two e6400s and two x2 4200s that I got a Frys.

I plan to maybe buy two sets of DDR2-800 memory and split it between the four systems, until DDR2 prices come down. Also, since I'm not overclocking the x2s, I can use the cheapest DDR2 memory for those systems.

In any case, I do not plan to play anything more than what I listed. I don't know how the X850XTPE performs under Oblivion. If it plays poorly then I guess I'll have to upgrade.

Haha, no I'm not that concerned about the $10 more he upped my bid. In any case, as I think more and more about this purchase, I think I ultimately made an okay purchase. I have the funds to buy the x1950PRO and might upgrade to that (or something better at a later date) it's just that I don't want to buy it if I'm not going to use it to its full potential and therefore waste $60 of my money just to have something to brag about.

Likewise, I wondered whether the 7600GT was the wiser choice and while $35 won't bankrupt me, that's like two 20 piece buckets of chicken or 2 XL pizzas. I could have used that extra money.
