Hey I'm in the process of upgrading my system from an:
A64 3200+ s754 (OC @ 2.65GHz)
DFI Lanparty nForce3
Radeon X800 Pro - (Now using a 9800 Pro)
to an
Intel e6400
Gigabyte 965P-DS3
I'm not a huge gamer anymore and with my busy schedule I hardly have the time. I tend to just use the computer to surf the web, watch movies, and occassionally game. I made a vow that I wouldn't buy any more new games until I've played the old ones I've bought. I'm also a guy who likes his best bang for his buck, so I tend to buy old school games for less than $20 with a few exceptions. So to give you an idea, the last game I completed was Fallout 1 + 2 (bought them when they were onsale at GoGamer) and the last game I bought was Civ 4.
Anyway, I won't be buying any new games until I finish my old ones, so here is what I have to sift through (not in any particular order):
Planescape: Torment
Diablo II + Expansion
IceWind Dale II
Freedom Force
CC Generals + Expansion
Medal of Honor + Expansion
Doom III
Half Life
Rome: Total War
Civ 4
KOTOR
Well, as you can see, I'm not a heavy gamer. I don't really like FPS anymore and mainly play strategy and RPGs. My old setup played all my games just fine, though in Civ4 the screen would lag if you scrolled too fast when using my 9800 Pro, though ran fine with x800pro. I don't plan to buy any new games except Fallout 3, which is said to run on the Oblivion engine and probably won't come out till next year, if at all. And if I do buy any other games, they will be budget games like KOTORII or other RPGs. I also don't game outside of 1024x768 resolution.
Since I can't use AGP with my new system, I need a new video card. I don't plan to do crossfire/sli and want the best bang for the buck card in PCI-express. I saw that in September there was a deal for the X850XT for $120 or $100AR. If I had been shopping for parts then, I would have bought it. Anyway, I don't want to buy a high-end card unless I have a need for it, so I have restricted mybudget to sub-$200. For under $200 there are the following:
X800GTO for $90
X850XT for $120
X850XTPE for $140
7600GT - $130 or $105AR
7900GS - $185 or $165AR
1950PRO - $200
Obviously, the best overall card is the 1950PRO and I'm tempted to buy it. But, an x800GTO would probably have played all my games fine (though I'm not sure about R:TW). But since my last card was an x800 Pro, I felt like I should at least upgrade my speed. However, last night I did an eBay bid for a new X850XTPE for $100 w/ $16 shipping. I put in a reserve of $115 so I would not go over $131. But anyway, my dad saw that I was outbidded and without consulting me, he upped the bid so that I wont it at $140 total, but I feel that perhaps I should have spent more money to go for either the 7900GS or the 1950PRO or perhaps I should have pocketed the money and gone with an X800GTO.
In the end, I spent $50 more than I probably needed to and for $50 more on top of that, i could have gotten a better card. I know that I get what I pay for, but on the other hand I don't want to buy something that I don't need.
My question to you is whether I should re-ebay my x850XTPE to recoup my costs and upgrade or downgrade tothe X800GTO or if you have any other suggestions let me know.
