Well the title says it all really, I'm going to buy a new rig and I can choose between these two pci-e cards.
The geforce would cost about 70-80 bucks more, and I don't really have any idea which would be a better buy...
Some people tell me the x800 (don't know about x850xt, haven't heard much about it) is faster than the geforce equivalent, but at the expense of features.. I would sacrifice a few fps for features, but nothing major!

Pretty please help me out, it's alot of money! :)

This is a pretty simple choice. The X850XT is a faster card than the 6800GT, and in this case it is cheaper. Get the X850XT.

i think X850XT compares to 6800 Ultra, not GT. I think a better comparison would be with X800XL. They perform similarly but i chose X800XL over 6800GT because it's cheaper ($300)

The X850Xt will outperform a 6800GT in generally every game except Doom 3. Since it's cheaper, it is by far a better deal. You won't really be disappointed with either one though. If you can get a X800XL, it will give 6800GT performance (about) for a cheaper price ($300-$350 compared to $400-$450).

Um, what? The X850XT is running faster clock speeds. Since they're both 16 pipeline cards that makes the X850XT faster. Not sure where you got that from.

And yeah, since the 6800GT is more expensive get the X850.

Some people tell me the x800 (don't know about x850xt, haven't heard much about it) is faster than the geforce equivalent...

In his topic he lists X850XT but then in his post he talk about the X800... confusing.

I hear you! I'm thinking the peepes he talking to don't know the x850 series yet (its pretty new. So they're commenting on the "benefits" of the ATI series over the nVidia line-up. Most reviews (IIRC) at that time seemed to give it to ATI (x800 series over 6800 series- "more with less" comments and such).

Still, whole thing is confusing as one could reasonable expect the X850XT to command a premium over the 6800GT any day.

If he's got his terminology wrong, well "buyer beware"!

Hey man where you getting the lower price for the 6800GT? Either it seriously overpriced or you've got the figures wrong. The AGP 6800 GT sells for $380 to $420 while the X850XT is usually closer to $500 and mostly above. So if this deal IS true then go for 6800 GT no hesitation. If not then look at the X800 XL, it will give you almost X850 XT performance at much lower cost.

hes talking pcie retard. x850xt is not agp and it doesn't cost over 500 either. try knowing what your saying before you say something. the pcie 6800 gt can be found for probably 415 or so while the x850xt like 475.

Even though the original post isn't entirely clear... If his options are either an X850XT or an X800 XT (PE) for less than a 6800GT, I would opt for the ATi card. If he's talking about the X800XL vs. the 6800GT then it becomes a pretty tight race with a nod going to the XL for better price/performance ratio.

If you can get the X850XT for less than the 6800 GT, but all means, go for it. :Q

There are a lot of nVidiots on this forum (even i own a 6800 GT), but the X850XT will pwn the 6800 GT on average, so i would say it is worth $70 more than the 6800 GT, nevermind less!

Wow, lots of replies! thanks alot people :)

I can get a MSI NX6800GT 256MB TV-OUT DVI PCIe for about 587 US dollars
or
MSI RX850XT 256MB TV-OUT DVI PCIe for about 514 US dollars.

The reason I was talking about the x800 as well was that I had heard that the x800 line, well, ATIcards in general were faster than the nVidia cards, but at the expense of features (ps 3.0 for example). So I was saying I'm willing to sacrifice some performance for features (but of course not too much), and therefore might go with the 6800GT.
I wasn't sure if the x850xt was faster than the 6800GT by a sizeable margin, because if it's a big difference in speed I'll probably go for the x850xt anyway.

I hope I was easier to understand now...

Edit: The prices are converted from swedish currency which is somewhere along 7 kronor for a dollar I think, so it should be accurate enough, even if not 100%.

Oh, okay...i see your edit now.

Damn that sucks that they are charging more for the GT over there when it's worth far less.

So I guess I should buy the x850xt then? No worries about missing features, things like missing out on HDR in Farcry and Splinter Cell? Things like that won't be commonplace will they?

It's a hotly contested argument, but IMO, by the time any number of games are actually using those features, you'll be buying a newer card that has them.

X850XT > 6800U.

Doom 3 sucks too much to count, so yeah...:p

Oh, & SM 3.0 currently = marketing. Someday it will be incredibly important, but certainly not yet.

SM 3.0 is like the Athlon 64. A great product [in this case feature], but ahead of its time.

Haha, I'm getting the AMD 64 3500+! :D

I don't mind saving money though, so what would you recommend instead? The 3500+ part is looking mighty nice though... :)

Edit: What is the recommended powersupply for a x850xt ? Does anyone know? I'll look around a bit myself.
Thanks so much for your help so far!

Hi Fowley (and Welcome to the Forums BTW!)

You might want to check some other threads (or make another post in CPU's, or use the search feature). Seems to me, many advocate buying the less expensive 3000 or so cuz they OC to the 3500 levels. Same performance, much less costs.
