hi there, im looking to upgrade my card from my 6600gt my options at the 500 dollar margin is the 6800gt and the x850 xt (which is on sale for this week only from 650) my question is what the there differences which should i get, whats faster on games ike BF2, half life 2, guild wars, wow, and new games that are coming out like FEAr and STALKER.

Lastly does the ATI feature SM3.0? if not why? and is it a huge downer? thanks guys

Do u guys even read the thread? He asking for x850 XT not x800xt.... which definitly makes a difference in my opinion... X850XT did a lot better than the 6800GT thats for sure... I think it even did better than the 6800 Ultra in most games... Thats what I'd go for if i had that kind of money...

It doesnt have SM 3.0... and not a big deal for the mean time.

But dude why all this rush... wait another month and U will have new vidcards out... like the 7800GT and the RS520.... and maybe the prices of the current cards will fall down...

If same price or $50 close, x850xt, otherwise if huge diff in price it is 6800GT.

Where can you get one for $500? The cheapest one I've seen is for $535. Wow and it wont let me link it because it says I have censored words.

X850XT is more powerful overall.
the nV cards will do great in Doom3, and in Battlefield 2, the ATI's do good in most other games, Far Cry, Half Life 2, NFSU2.. I'd honestly go with an X850 if I was going to buy new right now.

That said I love my 6800GT, I just think the X850's a bit better.

If you were going to spend that much money yuu may as well go for the 7800gtx. It would be about $100 more and much faster.

thanks for your replies guys, my local future shop has them clearing out cuz the over stocked alot i guess, the reason im asking and am worried is because of shader model 3.0 i know alot of ppl use ATI but i only know of far cry that has it and just for future games what if they have it will ATI implement a driver or update taht will enable it on to the card? its just kind of a let down but i really dont even know the difference cuz i was reading the smart shader HD and SM3.0 and they seem the same to me haha, as long as i wont need it for the next year or two. what is the main feature of SM3.0 and Smart shader HD,

Also the reason i cant buy 7800GTX is a. i dont have PCI-E haha. b. i dno b. over kill prob haha

ahh so confused, its just a hard decesion because of SM3.0 i mean people are saying the new HL2 lost coast will need SM3.0 to run High quality, i dont want to be limited especially when spending over 500 dollars, will I be stuck? it doesnt make sense because on Far Cry benches, the X850 XT does much better performance and IQ then the 6800GT but doesnt have SM3.0???? thats kinda wierd? can any one shed some light on this situation for me! thanks!

First off, HL2 Lost coast will NOT require SM3.0! It'll run fine on SM2.0 which is what the X850 has. Secondly, having SM3.0 capability on the 6800GT doesn't help as the performance hit in enabling SM3.0 features in current games is too high to give you comfortable framerates. Hence, SM3.0 is no advantage in this gen of cards (6800/X850), maybe on in the 7800 and next gen ATI card. Go with the X850, you'll be most satisfied.

This is a no brainer. X850XT is the fastest of its generation. 6800GT vs X800XL would make more sense. But if you're spending for an X850XT, just get a 7800..

I'd have to agree. Anyway, Nvidia is a better solution due to SLI. Upgrading is EASY and simple. (simple that you know you need that twin card; if you already got the SLI board that is)

Although Crossfire is out, a single 7800gtx is better than 2x 6800ultra's? + you need ATI mobo=lame.
