X850XT versus 6800Ultra

ATI (Asus) Radeon AX850 XT Extreme Edition 256MB

versus

BFG OC 6800 Ultra 256 MB

Which card should I go for? The XT is $20 more expenvsive than the Ultra, but it doesnt make much of a diff for me. The games I am looking to play include Half Life 2, Battlefield 2, and the upcoming Enemy Territory: Quake Wars game might get alot of play time from me. But mainly, itll be for BF:2? Any recommendations?

looks like for bf2 its the x850, plus its better by a bit. nvidia never came out with a 6850 or something so the x800xt is the utlras really competitor.

Wait for the 7800 to come out next month, then decide if it is worth the premium. If nothing else, the 6800 Ultra will likely drop in price.

1) Is the Asus X850XT Extreme Edition worth the extra $100+ over a Connect3D x850xt?
2) Any idea on when next month the 7800 is coming out?

1) "Worth it" is a relative term. Personally, I don't think it is.

2) Rumor has it that the 7800 will be paper launched in 3 weeks, and generally available by mid-July.

Yeah, I'd hold on for a bit more unless you find a great deal on a current card. The newer cards will likely push the prices down a bit on the current cards.

Hmmm...anyone think it might work to go with an eVGA Ultra 6800 and then use their step up program to upgrade to a 7800 if I feel as if its necessary? Id like a new gfx card for Bf:2 release (late June)....Would it be reasonable to expect an eVGA 7800 available a month later?

According to the Register, G70 won't ship until late Q3.

I don't know why you people think that the G70 will be available by July, much less at a normal price. June 22 is the PAPER launch day. Nvidia still has to ship the GPU's to manufactuers, then they have to be shipped to places like Newegg, then you have to wait for the prices to drop below $800.

i would say wait for the next generation since ur willing to spend so much on a highend card. u would be able to get a much more powerful card for the same price.

well people are optimistic...however getting highend cards might be rare and expensive again like this generation

wait, for now x850 owns the ultra by very little.

sm3 is useless with the ultra because of the performance hit.

Unfortunately for you, SM3 results in a performance gain not hit?

Sure but name 1 game where because of SM3.0 6800 series of cards are actually faster than ATI cards?...........It's not Far Cry or Splinter Cell: pandora tomorrow....I cant really think of any.

If he wants to spend 400+, might as well wait for next generation cards. Otherwise, it's probably better to go with SLI setup and 6800Ultra if he has that much money to blow.

The only difference in brands is the coolers fitted, the pcbs all come from the same place (this only applies to ATi) The connect3d use the standard reference coolers.

What ever card you buy your gonna be happy with it and its gonna last you a while.

Of note:
I currently have four SM3 games- Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Lego Star Wars (I have a five year old), Far Cry, and Painkiller.

Three of those four are pretty huge titles, and with Splinter Cell it's SM3 or SM1.1 with reduced IQ on a X850XT.

Three games I own also have nV only image enhancing features: Riddick, Far Cry, and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. I believe Lego Star Wars has SM3 only features as well as there is a blurb with it that shows a light saber trail that's supposedly only visible if you have SM3.

This is not like 5800/5900 days where I argued "OK, poor DX9 performance, but on what? Tomb Raider, AOD?".

There are popular titles out right now where you miss out if you buy a SM2 card, and there will surely be more to come given the strength of nVs developer relations. IMO, if you want ATI this year, you should wait for the R520.

Edit:
In before Ackmed: I'd better note that in some some of the nV only functionality comes with a performance hit and/or tradeoff with other features like AA. (or Ackmed will for sure)

For me, the option to see the new features at 10X7 0X0X is better than no option to see them at all because your video cards core was designed in 2003. But you will have to make that call yourself.

They X850 if you play HL2 and BF2 (demo on the 10th btw). You will miss out on HDR in a few games with the X850. But if you want to see the IQ enhancing features of SM 3.0 (Displacement Mapping in UE3 games) you will probably need SLI.
