Whilst I was playing Battlefield 2 the other day I got a message from my Catalyst Control Center stating that my X850XT was running above safe tempurature. After seeing this I took my computer apart and reset the heatsink using Arctic Silver Ceramique. Just now I got the same message again and the card was running at 90' C. The air coming out the back from where the graphics card is is very warm. I don't know what could be causing this, should I start thinking about investing in a new heatsink? Could my current one be taking a dump or am I doing something wrong... because something is definately not right here. It's not even overclocked at all. Thanks for any reply.

90C is almost 200F...that would melt the plastics on the card. It's possible that the temp. is wrong.

Have you tried to get a new video driver? Nvidia reports diff. temp when install some beta driver. Also, is there another card seated next to your video card, which blocks the air flow? And check to see if your vga fan is running smoothly.

That is quite hot although the threshold operating temperature should be well over 100C. What does your card idle at? Perhaps there is something restricting the airflow to the GPU fan?

Normally it ran at like 42' C or slightly higher idle and around 70- 75' C at load which according to alot of other people with this card was normal. I did notice it I didnt' have these problems until I updated my Catalyst to 5.7, with 5.7 my idle temp was around 55' C or higher and under load it would go well over 85'C, when I got the message stating it was above safe temperature I alt tabbed out and went to my control center to see it at 80, then I tabbed back into BF2 and let it run for a second then tabbed back out and looked at it was 90'C! I reverted back to 5.6 and my idle temps are back to normal but I have yet to test it with BF2, I did run a 3dmark test for like a minute and checked it and it was in the range of my old load temps (about 74'C). So I'm hoping this was the problem, if not I guess there is something wrong with my fan and I'll be purchasing a new one. Thanks for all the help though, after I test in BF2 I'll update this for anyone else having the same problem. Just for reference I'm on Windows XP x64.

EDIT: Running at 82'C at load.
