I checked the hot deals forum but didn't see it. The old eye-sight must be going on me. ;)

I just replied to that thread indicating that the deal is now $89.99 after a $30 MIR.

I'm not sure if that was already well-known. It didn't seem so from the final few posts on the thread.

The x850xt is a lot of card for $90.

Very true...and it is sad. The trouble is, none of the mid-range SM3 cards seem capable of running HDR in Oblivion. The benchmarks here on Anandtech are pretty harsh.

The mid-range cards are all in the teens during the outdoor benchmarks. To match the x850xt's peformance with HDR enabled, you have to spend at least $100 more for an x1800xt/x1900gt (or even more for a 7900gt or higher).

Oblivion still looks stunning without HDR. I'd be curious to hear just how well the 7600gt/x1800gto crowd is doing with Oblivion and HDR enabled at 1280x1024. For $90, the x850xt is hard to beat, at least for a really low budget Oblivion rig.

I own both an x850xt agp and a 7600GT KO. And played Oblivion in the same exact settings. Honestly, x850xt agp performed much much much better than 7600GT KO. I tried HDR, it seems too much.

Yeah, I do agree that SM3 and HDR are overrated. You could live without HDR. So yeah, bloom for the win!

Does anyone have any insight as to why there don't seem to be a comparable drop in any nVidia, previous-generation, high-end cards? The x850xt has stuck around and kept dropping in price for a while now. I haven't seen anything like it from the 6800gt/ultra generation.

The 6800GT/Ultra are just way too damn expensive. And they weren't as popular. And the 6800GS already destroyed the 6800GT. But the 7600GT is already taking both the 6600GT and the 6800GS.

Was the x850xt(xtpe) just that much cheaper to produce? It's just odd to me that you wouldn't see a price drop in the 6800gt/ultra lines as they tried to clear inventory.

lol yeah

I would spend another 50 bucks for the x1800xt ;)

The funny thing I could've grabbed the x1800xt without a question for my other PC. But being a dell, and limited upgradability....I was stuck with the 7600GT KO and had to replace it's inky dinky crappy HSF with a zalman...costing as much as a x1800xt lol :p

But overall i'm happy with the performance.

At least you got a cheap alternative before the "next gen" cards come into play.

i think ati had the biggest overstock in their history . . . mostly x850 series . . . wth were they thinking?

ANYway it is an exceptional [now midrange] card for the price. i have been enjoying my then $200 AGP x850xt [that o/c's past stock PE speeds] since January.

it plays Oblivion at 8x11 with everything *Maxed* and 'on' and 'high' - except self shadows and with grass down] and even manages 4xAA+Bloom without slowdown.

HDR is overrated - if HL2 EP1 is any example and for MOST games it will bog down all but the fastest of today's cards

if this purchase if for this years most demanding games, it will serve well . . . and probably even do ok with next years' with some reduced gfx.

i expect to keep mine for another year till i build my next *completely new* rig. :)

EDIT> Damn, was that just 21K posts . . . i better head for bed
:Q
well, that's less than 9 posts a day. :p

Yeah, I think ATI took it hard that generation. There was nothing wrong with their product (except maybe the noisy coolers)...they just got to the table to late with it and the nvidia stuff was really popular. I think the benchmarks for the x850xt have improved considerably with driver updates as well.

They're a hell of a bargain though. I bought one for about $150 at the beginning of the year and it really worked out well for me. Handles oblivion great. I'd chosen to turn bloom off and turn the grass distance up while editing the ini to thin it out slightly. I never liked the grass pop in and bloom didn't do much for me other then hurt framerates.
